Tetouan Tetouan owes its quite unique Hispano-Moroccan atmosphere to its more than 40 years (1912-1956) as the capital of the Spanish protectorate. The medina is a fascinating Unesco World Heritage site, the modern ville nouvelle contains some glorious examples of Spanish colonial architecture. Leave a Comment

Ait BenHaddou Ait Benhaddou is one of the most exotic and best-preserved kasbahs in the entire Atlas region. This is hardly suprising, since it has been money poured into it as a result of being used for scenes in as many as 20 films, notably Lawrence of Arabia, Jesus of Nazareth (for witch much of the village was rebuilt), and most recently, Gladiator. The kasbah's fame may endure in films but its population has dwindled in recent years. The kasbah is now under Unesco protection. Leave a Comment

heading back down onto the barren plateau by angiebabe, 4 more photos Nkob is a town that many drivers - like us unfortunately! - would tend to drive straight through or use for a quick food, coffee or loo stop! Here though there is a kasbah that is recommended, a busy market day and a well recommended place to stay. The scenery around here though in my opinion is rather impressive with the nearby rugged weather worn mountain and stoney desert landscape. Leave a Comment

Koutoubia At 70 m. tall, the minaret is visible for miles in any direction. The word minaret , originates from Arabic, Alminar or "the place of light", from where the muezzin dispels the darkness with the word of the Holy Quran. At dusk, in the fading crimson light of evening, the resounding call to prayer that echoes across the city has a powerful emotive effect. Buildt by the Almohad, Yakoub el-Mansour (1184-1199), this is the oldest and best preserved minaret. It is also a classic representation of Moroccan-Andalucian architecture; its features are mirrored in many other minarets throughout the country, but not one of these matches the Koutoubia's for sheer size. Medersa Bou Inania The Medersa was buildt by the Mrenid sultan Bou Inan between 1350 and 1357. The zellij muqarna (plaserwork) and wood carving are amazingly elaborate, and vieuws from the roof are also impressive. Different from other teological colleges this medersa contains an elaborate mosque complete with a minaret. Leave a Comment

Midelt Lying almost at the centre of Morocco between the Middle and High Atlas mountains, Midelt is a kind of no-man's-land between the north and the south. The surrounding countryside is barren , but breathtaking, especially as the mountains of the Eastern High Atlas rise seemingly out of nowhere Of little interest in itself, the town is a useful base for several excellent excursions of the Jebel Ayachi range. Moulay Idriss Moulay Idriss is named after Morocco's most revered saint, a great-grandson of the prophet Mohammed and the founder of the country's firts real dynasty. Moulay Idriss fled Mecca in the late 8th century AD in the face of persecution. Idriss settled at Volubilis, where he converted the locals to Islam and made himself their leader. From there he went on to establish Morocco's first imperial dynasty. Here you can find the only Cylindrical minaret in Morocco. Leave a Comment

Rabat The great walls of Rabat enclose a largely modern city of wide boulevards and bureaucratic-looking buildings. But several quarters remain to remind you of Rabat's rich past. Beside being historical rich, Rabat is - of course - the modern capital, and thus houses monuments and museums of national importance. Rabat's relaxed atmosphere is a welcome surprise to most visitors. Leave a Comment

Ali ben Youssef Medersa The medersa is the largest theological college and was buildt by the Saadians in 1565 (and much restored in the 1960's). Altough undergoing a painstaking restoration, it is a peacful and meditative place with some absolutely stunning examples of stucco decoration. Upstairs the are students' cells. As usual , they are small and bare. It's hard to imagine how, as is claimed they crammed as many as 900 people into these rooms. Leave a Comment
