Cookery Class In Marakesh

by Wittyone55

Hi, I'm a 50 something Aussie woman living in London. I went to Marakesh last year on my own (had been there before). The previous visit I went to the High Atlas Mountains and spent a night there in Ouzazzarte (but that was Club Med) and thought it was great. Last visit, apart from haggling in the souk and wandering around the local attractions, I did a day Cookery Course at La Maison Arabe - It was great. They took you to a lovely setting in the Palmerie. The cookery class was fun, well organised and we had a great bunch of people attending. Then we sat out in the Garden and ate what we cooked, with wine of course! To book, I phoned the hotel and they had a place for an English speaking person, but this was off season. Also, I am looking at going on a Pueblo Inglais trip to Spain for 8 days in May speaking English at a live-in venue in Soria. They pay for all except the flight to Madrid....

Ouaalga - The women's cooperative.

by pfsmalo

On our way down to the Western Sahara, somebody mentioned "Argan Oil", so we stopped in Ouaalga when we saw a sign for the "Women's cooperative for Argan Oil", on the right. After being bumped about on the dusty road for 3/400 metres, found a young girl who spoke French and she took us round to the Coop. We ended up having a superb afternoon with the women, amidst much laughing and music. They brought out cushions and mats for us, bread made by themselves, tea and home-made honey and proceeded to give us a real Berber afternoon. They gradually lost their natural restraints at being photographed and fairly let me run loose. Regrettably, around 4 pm we had to take leave after buying some "Argan Oil", amid promises to come back and don't forget to send the photos, which I have done yesterday. If you want to know the process for creating this oil, google "argan oil" and read the Wikipedia...

Essaouira - Visit a spice shop.

by pfsmalo

Invited in for tea and a chat by Brahim, the part owner, spent over an hour testing the various perfumes, scents and spices. Ideal for picking up some musc, jasmin and amber. Good selection of local medecines as well. Capable of finding you some saffron (ultra expensive in Europe) for cooking. Also carries Argan oil, although I prefer using one of the women's cooperatives, notably the one in Ouaalga.

Tip Photo
Essaouira - Walk around the town.

by pfsmalo

From the town centre a nice walk around town to be had whilst making our way up to the ramparts overlooking the Atlantic for the sunset. The bastion of Bab Marrakech has about 10 17th century Spanish cannons protecting the old city from sea attack. These ramparts designed and built bya Frenchman Cornut, were based on the model of St. Malo in Brittany, France. That's why it reminded me of home. The inner medina is well worth the exploration of its winding passages.

Telouet - Glaoui casbah.

by pfsmalo

Telouet sits on the old road from Marrakech to Ouarzazarte and became a strategic stronghold for the Glaouas. The casbah was started around 1860 and finished in the 1900's. The last of the Glaouas, Thami al Glaoui a pacha of Marrakech lived here from 1875 until 1956. Unfortunately today, the casbah has been abandoned and although far from being a ruin only the part built in the 20th.century still stands, albeit in a dilapidated state. Some of the rooms still show their former splendor however and are well worth the visit. Cost of the visit is 10 DH per person. Sometimes the gardian is not there and it is Ahmed that has the keys.

Desert Adventure

by Burkynafaso

Just imagine you are in the middle of desert. nothing around, just huge sand dunes and millions of stars above your head. I've never seen so beautiful sky before. This was really the best part of our Moroccan trip. It started in Erg Chebbi where me and my other seven friends met a local guy Assou. He took us to his house, made a dinner for us and next day showed us the area around Erg Chebbi. In the evening we took camels and went to one of his camps in the desert. And this was amazing, we climbed the big sand dune and watch the sunset from up there. When the sun went down, the guy prepered an original berber food for us and we were just talking, singing, having fun. We didn't miss the sunrise next morning and after a breakfast we took the camels and rode them back to Erg Chebbi. The guy - Assou always took a perfect care of us and we were given much more for the money than we thought....

getting lost in Marrakech

by Burkynafaso

It's pretty easy and you don't need anything to try this one. Just walk into the streets of Medina and you are lost after few meters. Plenty of people around, old men just sitting in front of their stores drinking berber whiskey (sweet mint tea) and trying to make you buy. Watch out, they are damn good in it. You can spent whole day just walking in medina and checking out all the interesting stuff around and if you think you've already seen this place, maybe you are right but won't get from this labirint that quickly anyway.Great, interesting with it's own special vibe. I recommend to see and get lost!!!

turn off to Telouet near the top of TiznTichka

by angiebabe

The highest mountain pass of Tizn Tichka for motor vehicles in Morocco was made possible by the ruling French. The drive is stunning from Marrakech with a variety of landscapes in which berber villages are seen inhabiting the land along the way - whether on undulating fertile farm lands or on steep hillsides and envitably you will see locals out working or going out about their daily lives. As the road begins its ascent you will get glimpses of the Atlas mountains - often with snow still on the highest peaks - and at times when the land is lush and growing, pretty scenes appear from behind each corner. After passing the village of Taddert, which is a popular resting point for truck and taxi travellers with 24 hour food and restrooms provided, the road begins its serious incline to make its way up the mountain pass of TiznTichka and the road winds it way up at time with tight corners and...

TiznTest

by angiebabe

The second highest mountain pass in Morocco - 2093 m - giving beautiful views from the lookouts from the top and along the winding route as it makes it way down the argan tree covered hills to the Sous plain below. The Tizn Test pass road was built by the Fench in the 1930s. At this height, during the winter months from November to April, the pass can be blocked by snow. This route is a stunning drive - lovely scenery pretty much all the way from Marrakech at one end and Taroudannt at the other. Unfortunately, though I got stunning views along the way with autumn colours in the valleys and snow on the mountains, it was just past sunset when I arrived at the Tizn Test pass so I still have to haul out the photos from previous visits and scan them in!
