Drive up to Todra Gorge

by angiebabe

There are a number of hotels along the road that goes on up from Boumalne to the Gorges du Todra, at the main gorge point and also on further at the village of Tamtatouche, but if you are wanting to stay at an amazing hotel and feel like a Moroccan prince or princess then you might want to stay at a converted kasbah/palace which is now Hotel Xaluca on the hill overlooking Boumalne - and then travel on up the Todra gorges road prior or the next day.The hotels addresses are usually given as kilometre points away from Boumalne/the turn off from the main road - and the whole distance is only 14 km to the main gorges. - the scenery does continue on to the village of Tamtatouche which is 18 km from the Todra gorge main point with its hotels across the small river walkway. Its also a lovely drive through to the berber area and village of Imilchil - with its new road over the mountains its a joy...

Amazing ancient living ksar at Goulmima

by angiebabe

The Lonely Planet writes about Goulmima being "a pleasant town thats a more interesting stopover than Er Rachidia","the main diversion is the labyrinthine Ksar Ait Goulmima, a living walled village home to around 300 people"So Ive for a long time felt an intrigue and urge to visit this place - and this October, on the way back from the Date festival at Erfoud my urge was fulfilled!!We followed the directions of the Lonely Planet turning left at the main roundabout coming from Er Rachidia, after 500m passing Maison dhotes Les Palmiers, then another 800 m to pass the youth hostel on the left and the ksar just a little further on.A strong blast of wind, rain and sand arrived just as getting out of the car and made a hurried dash into the shelter through the ksar gate entrance - here we did a deal with a guy who offered to guide me aruond the ksar and off we went. The 500 year old mosque is...

THE STORYTELLERS OF MARRAKESH

by DAO

The Halaiquis (storytellers) are the keepers of the oral traditions and folklore knowledge of Morocco. Unfortunately for most tourists they speak in Darixa (Morocco’s Arabic dialect). Performances can range from adaptations of well-known stories to poetry. For the local men, this is a daily theatre experience. These talented tellers of history and fiction learned their trade over generations. Their origins pre-date mass education, and electricity. It is truly amazing to see how popular they still are. You will never see a Storyteller without an eager crowd

Really special place -Amtoudi's granary forrtress

by angiebabe

This is a fortified granary, proper term agadir, from the 12th century - back in the days when the berber tribes lived in fortified communities - the kasbahs and ksars we learn about when travelling around Morocco with high walls and lots of people living inside - to protect themselves from raids. As you drive around Southern Morocco if you look up to the tops of hills or mountains you may see the remains of these fortified storage places - safe places where the community could keep their harvests and supplies of vegetables and other foods, even bees in their hives would be maintained up there. With someone assigned to be the guardian, or caretaker, and keep the place under lock and key. typically these places would be really complex affairs - hundreds of rooms - and there are still a few around that are in amazing condition that can be visited to see this - many are in hard to get places...

Gnaoua music at the village of Khamlia

by angiebabe

A few kms south of Merzouga is the 'black' village of Khamlia - because the people who live there were originally from the sub-sahara, and are black - there is no racial discrimination in this and you will learn that special thing about Morocco people from all colours and backgrounds live in this country like a big melting pot of history and connections and none is thought about differences in skin colour - This is a popular place to visit to hear the Gnaoua Music Association present their gnaoua music - they will perform for tour groups - maybe not if you are on your own and you might be required to wait until more people turn up but it is worth hearing them dance, sing and play their instruments. CDs of their music is available for purchase and there is no problem with taking photos.

Walk up the big dune at Merzouga for sunset

by angiebabe

Erg Chebbi is the highest dune which is up near Hassi Labied, Merzouga also has an impressive dune that is popular for seeing the sunsets and sunrises from - it takes a while to get up it to the top so bear this in mind to allow enough time but also take care too that the sun does go down pretty quickly after the sunset and the place is in darkness by approximately half an hour.YOu will get views in all directions up there so take your camera and make the most of it! Its a beautiful view as also the smaller dunes below indulate nicely and create photogenic shapes and landscape in the terrain. There are also camel trips available here too - along with quad bikes - just as the auberges all along the Erg Chebbi stretch of dunes provide sunrise and sunset camel trips they are a tourist attraction here,But with lots of crests and waves in the dunes there are lots of nice places to sit and soak...

Fes

by solopes

Most European visitors put Fes in a second row of priorities of their visit, concentrating mainly in Marrakesh or Casablanca. But, for me, Fes is the real gem of Morocco. The sensation of wandering in the medina really takes to medieval times, like nowhere else in Muslim countries. I've been there twice, and though the second time didn't confirm the emotions (and risks!) of the first one, it still shines for its authenticity and contrasts. Don't doubt. First priority for sure!

To appreciate them fully you need a guide to tell you all about their history. If it was a quiet day then the tombs and gardens would be very peaceful and serene but 1 guide said that they are always busy with tourists.

Gnaoua Festival 2010

by windcity

The Gnaoua festival in Essaouira runs from the 24th to the 27th of June, The line up has not yet been announced for 2010. This is the busiest time of year in Essaouira with hotels being booked well in advance and restaurants struggling to keep up. The festival is popular with both Moroccans and visitors. During the 4 day event you can experience small intimate sessions which are generally ticket only to free out door stages at Bab Marrakech, Moulay Hassan Square and party's down at the beach. The music is mainly Gnaoua with some fusion, world music and trance thrown in. For more information check out the festival web-site http://www.festival-gnaoua.net/Expect the weather to be windy, it often is at this time of year. However this presents a great opportunity to wind surf or kite surf during the day.
