Sultan Moulay Ismail was responsible for transforming this small provincial town into a monumental imperial city. A ruthless leader he conscripted a massive slave army and fought off the Berber tribes to the South and Europeans forces rooted in the north. With captured European slaves and he built an enormous Imperial complex with over 20 gates, 50 palaces, massive walls extending over 45 kms.The Place El Hedim meaning “square of demolition and renewal” is the social center of Meknes. Much of the medina was destroyed to make the square so it could be used as a staging area to construct the Imperial Palace. Along to the square is the exquisite Bab Mansour, a well preserved gate with classic Almohad designs and columns removed from the nearby ancient city of Volubilis. The Djemaa al Fna is without a doubt the main draw in Marrakesh, having been declared by UNESCO as a “Materpiece of World Heritage” it is quite possibly the most dramatic open dinner theater on earth. Our one year old daughter, Abigail, quickly experienced the craziness of this place when a snake charmer threw a snake in her lap. She took it rather well. The djemaa al fna meaning “assembly of the dead” is now anything but what its name suggests. It is a vibrant and lively square at the heart of Marrakesh. Stepping on to it is an unforgettable experience. There is a feast of food to explore on the square especially when hundreds of stalls are erected in the evening. With its host of healers, musicians, and entertainers it is the most bizarre open air dinner theater on the planet. In the evening over 100 restaurants open up stalls on the massive square. Located in the northern medina of Marrakesh the Ben Youssef Madersa is one of Moroccos most exquisite buildings. It exemplifies Andalusian and Moroccan art and architecture from the 14th and 16th centuries. The medersa was a center for Koranic learning, where up to 900 students lived in learned. Every available surface is intricately decorated in carved stucco, lintel screens, carved cedar doors, and zellij tile. The art and architecture is largely Andalusian-influenced with many parallels to Spains Alhambra Palace in Granada. Also I would recommend reading through our VT travel pages that have beenput together with lots of info in tip form with photos to have a read and get a feel of choices - as much of your post here is 'asking for the whole shibang' of information required to have a trip to Morocco!Ive quite a bit of information in my pages on some of my favourite and frequented places in Morocco - and so have a lot of other VTers.I would also recommmend not going without a good guidebook to have along with you and that would of course make very good preparation reading for you too - I recommend the Lonely Planet guide book on Morocco and the DK eyewitness guidebook - and have found the information in those as being a lot more correct than the information that is in the normally fantastic Rough Guide series of guide books.As for March-April, its one of the best and most beautiful months to be in Morocco...

Marrakesh is sitting on the foot of the Atlas mopuntains and near the Sahara desert and i one of the most interesting towns in Morocco.It has a lot of different ethnic groups because it's sitting on a crossroad between the coast and the desert and Marrakesh is just one big orgasm for your senses.In my opinion it's one of the most thrilling cities in the world and an absolute must see.

Agadir is the main beach resort in morocco and a very pleasant place for a holiday in the winter months.The place has a pretty international feel and a nice beach and is a perfect place for a family holiday.I also found that the place has considerably less hustlers than the rest of the tourist towns in Morocco and that is a big plus if you ask me.
