Red light Area

by chavez

Whilst in Agadir, we were getting alot of smiles from Moroccon women, which we found strange. As we had been told about the customs etc. We later found out that some and i say some females are ladies of the night. Which was a sad reflection. If you do tend to visit the beach during the evening and sat outside on eof the resturants and have a drink. Just be mindful if you get females sitting on the next table give you looks. However, be laso vry vareful majority of moroccon women are decent and will not take kindly at being looked at. How do you tell the difference, the ones taht smile at you and invite you to their table are the ladies of the night, to put it politely. But they will have their minders with them.

Any carpet shop that offers...

by Kettleman

Any carpet shop that offers mint-tea and the opportunity to view 400-plus Berber made carpets that can be posted to your house anywhere in the world.Whilst you don't have to buy it is in an experience to see the carpets. You are free to view the carpets and mostly the shop keepers want you to buy and in a few cases they pressure you like timeshare touts. Simply thank then and leave! If you want to buy a carpet, then they can supply a myriad of ways fopr geting it back to your house! I was actually interested in buying a small rug really that wold have gone over the bike but the guy didn't want to sell one that small!Be courteous at all times!

Terrible Taxis

by SabrinaSummerville

Beware of seemingly friendly taxi drivers in Morocco.A few years ago I brought my Mum and Dad on what we knew would be Dad's last ever holiday. He had Alzheimers disease and we knew he would be admitted to full time hospital care when we returned to ireland. In fact he died two years later. In any event, we decided to go to a local market as my Mum loves these things. We emerged from our lovely hotel and there were taxis lined up outside. The driver of one of them wandered out of the bushes and asked where we wanted to go. We explained the particular market that we wanted to shop at, and off we drove. Next thing we passed the market and he said "Look, it's closed to day - it never opens on a Saturday."He then proceeded to drive off. We were both upset and mad, because he had not told us this in advance. This was not to be the end of it, however. he proceeded to drive us off up the mountains...

Djemaa el-Fna in Marrakech

by Bali-Babe

Djemaa el-Fna is in the heart of the Medina in Marrakech. The square is full of activity and excitement any time during the day, but it's around sunset when the action really is in full swing. Hold onto your wallet and dirham at all times, and be careful of child pickpocketers approaching you for hugs and warm welcomes. The square is alive with jugglers, story tellers, magicians, dancers, fortune tellers, snake charmers, musicians, acrobats and crazy people all trying to entertain you for a few bucks. Be prepared to be sucked dry of all the money you have in your pockets, and be aware of the exchange rate. The local people are pro's at overwhelming the tourist with unusual entertainment and overloading your senses in order to talk your dirham right out of your pockets (which is all part of the fun!) Snakes will be draped around your neck and multiple live monkeys will be tossed on you all...

Take care of your tyres...

by grovier

If you are driving in Marocco, sometime you will met some problems with your tyres...If it needs to be repared, don't let anybody make it, and look to your tires everytime until it will be repared and replace in the car, because if you dont make it they will surely change the tire with an old and balooning one and say"faut changer"... The only way is to be "with your tyre"...

Very expensive Restaurants

by meaganelizabeth

There are several restaurants like this in Marrekech, they are only for tourists. Your hotel will naturally send you there, and you can do it the first night, but you will see why I tell you not to. these are considered traditionaly Moroccan, and they are like three or four course. The places are all tiled nicely, and the table is nice, there is a small show. Live music, and belly dancer. The cost is about $65 a person just for dinner. That is fine in paris or New york, but you are in Marrekech. THe food is usually just disgusting. The drinks are New York prices as well, and are not included. It is certainly bearable, but there are definately alternatives. The food in Morocco to my knowledge is not very good. The desert is great, and the wine of course is fine. Again the mint tea is delicious. This is probably more fun if you are with more than one person and willing to get up and dance...

The Water Seller

by grets

This man is dressed up to the nines in what I can only assume is some sort of traditional costume, and carries a fancy container full of water which he pours out into smaller containers. As a tourist, you should NOT drink the water - it is tap water and would most likely play havoc with your stomach. For a small charge, he will pour his water out as you take a photograph. I thought he was so colourful that it was worth the fee.

Telephone

by JLBG

In Morocco, it is easy to find a place from where to telephone. In the cities, public telephones are everywhere. There are also telephone shops with several booth. Beware : when you buy a telephone card it will work either into the public telephones or in the telephones of a shop but they are different. Moreover, it will work in a given shop but not in the one next street.

PUSHY TRADERS

by mickeyjane1

THIS IS A PROBLEM FOR TOURISTS IN MOROCCO, IT IS A PROBLEM BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE AVOID GOING OUT THEIR HOTELS SO AS NOT TO BE PESTERED BY THEM.HOWEVER IT IS WORTH REMEMBERING THAT IT IS PART OF LIFE THERE, IT IS THEIR WAY OF EARNING A LIVING, ITS ANNOYING TO US BECAUSE WE ARE NOT AS CUSTOMED TO IT.I PERSONALLY DO NOT LIKE IT EITHER, AS I FIND IT HARD TO IGNORE THEM I FEEL RUDE, BUT AT THE SAME TIME IF I WANT TO GO SOMEWHERE I KNOW THAT IF I STOP FOR ALL OF THEM IT WILL TAKE ME ALL DAY TO GET THERE. IN MOROCCO THERE ISNT A LOT YOU CAN DO BECAUSE WHATEVER YOU DO THEY WILL KEEP PESTERING.BUT FOR ME THE BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE IS IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO GO IN THE SHOP, RESTAURANT WHATEVER THEY ARE TRYING TO GET YOU TO GO INTO..THEN JUST CARRY ON WALKING, GIVING THEM A FIRM NO ,SORRY, NOT INTERESTED TYPE OF THING.THEY WILL STILL KEEP SHOUTING, BUT YOU WILL BE GONE, ANOTHER BIT OF ADVICE IS DO NOT...

beware of false friends !!

by francolin

a tourist is seen as fair game as a means to earn a few bob..I was caught with this one..walking to the market a man casually walked with me asking the odd question ect..apparently un-interested in me..after a while he was doing little things like holding me back so that I did,nt get run over and pointing out little things of interest..then he asked if I would write to him from england because he liked to receive letters or cards from different countries.. why not I thought..he asked where I was going and said that that was where he worked and that if I followed him he could give me his address..like a lamb to the slaughter I meekly followed him..the next thing I know ,I am at his "friends" shop where they insist I drink tea..I do as he shows me all his wares..it was a "pharmacie"..when I said I did,nt want anything he became very insistent and it got a bit intimidating..in the end, to...
