It's an art

by africaking

Begging is a form of income in Morocco, mostly in tourist areas, they will use their children or any other means to make you part with your money, petty theft is a problem. It's not all doom and gloom 90% of the people are lovely and very friendly, but a small minority, might end up spoiling your holiday. If you find yourself giving money, don't be surprised if you get 101 people running towards you.Always keep your wallet safe and any jewelry hidden, oh and try not to look like you have just stepped off the beach, not only does it insult the locals but makes you a target.

Expensive bathroom

by cabessas

Wether in a train station or a bus station I was allways asked to pay to use the bathroom. But beware! You are only asked to pay after when you are leaving it: just because you managed to sneak in, they will charge you on your way out! If you really have to go to the bathroom, ask the price in advance and try to negotiate! You can negotiate everything in Morocco. When nature calls...I guess there's no alternatiive..

Haggle or be ripped off

by sjvessey

Buy something from the bazaar, and you will most likely pay four to five times what it's actually worth. This is especially true of the carpet merchants, who will try to flog you carpets for $1,000 a time. What a joke. Remember in this town haggling is the rule. If you don't have the stomach for it, don't buy anything. Try to show as little interest as possible what they are trying to sell you, even if you are interested. Buying anything in a culture that uses haggling as a price-finding mechanism takes a long time if you want to get a good price. Expect to have to argue with the shop owner for at least 10 minutes per item if you want to get a price anywhere near what your item is actually worth. Locals would probably get it knocked down to 25% of the original asking price. You'll be lucky to beat them down to 40%.

Sellers

by bhoeyb

Watch out for sellers of fossiles and minerals. They pop out everywhere, even when you least expect it: in the desert, on a sand dune, ...When you can buy a souvenir at 50% of it's original price, you've made a good deal. But it will take at least 20 minutes to get the price down.

Photo of individuals

by JLBG

Do not try to take photos of people by surprise (when YOU are the local, do you appreciate if tourists take a photo of you without asking ?). If you take a general photo, take care that nobody is in the foreground. If you take a closer view (shop), always ask. In touristy areas, the answer will often be negative, unless you have bought something in the shop. Sometimes, the individual will ask for a tip. In that case, you have better not take the picture. In non touristy places (look at my Rabat page), you will be surprised that most accept. Some prefer to hide while you take the photo, others will be glad to appear on your photo and will be even happier if you write down their name and address to send them the photo (don't forget to do it !)

swapped carpet/kilim in marrakech

by MyHollyDay

While I was busy haggling with this carpet selling on a kilim, another guy must have folded up the kilim I was bargaining for and wrapped up a much smaller and probably lesser quality kilim and sold that to me. I did not find out until I came home! I have learned the hard way never have the shop wrap up things you bought. Get the tissue paper, bubble wrap, plastic bag...etc what ever they offer and do it yourself.

Everyone wants to be your personal tour guide

by jillzi

When exiting the train you will have at least five people approach you to be your personal tour guide. They say it's not safe for a woman to walk around by herself(True and False). They will take you to all of the shops and the sites. Just be warned that they will get a cut on purchase that you make. Oh, and they are very friendly with their clients(Good and Bad). It's nice to have a friendly tour guide, but it's a bit much when the store owner leans over to give you a kiss, Between my friend and I, we received at least five marriage proposals. I was there in 1992. Maybe things have changed. The tour guide was not a bad idea as long as you know what to expect. When our tour guide took us to this carpet store I was able to have a carpet custom made in any color I chose. I think I was duped because I paid $1200 for a carpet in a third world country(da!!). I was told that I could make...

Beware the Carpet Sellers!

by Newchocs

The biggest problem with organised tourist trips in this country is that they invariably stop at carpet shops in the courty where the only option is to listen or escape over miles of saharan sand dunes! Try chanting to yourself, putting cotton buds in your ears or speaking a really unusual language. If all else fails, pretend you are having a heart attack and maybe they will leave you alone.

Local Guides

by brancolini

Local guides all over Morocco can be «official» (they'll show you a piece of ID) or not. The difference will not be relevant. What you have to make sure they understand is that you don't want to visit his «cousin»'s shops and that he explains to you from the start what you will be visiting...
