Carpet sellers

by Alice-Kees

On entering Morocco in Tangier or Ceuta and Tetouan there are loads of local touts who are only after one thing and that is selling you a carpet or another piece of Moroccan art from their shops. Usually they come to you as a 'free' tourist guide and offer you to show you around town or escort you to a nice restaurant or a view point. The best advise is to stay firm and let them know you're not interested. The worst thing to do is lose your temper and start argueing with these guys as they're very proud people. And whatever you do, don't ever mention a price for a carpet (unless of course you want to bid for one), as this will be understood the negotiations have started.

Tangier - tourist trap central

by AussieDude

The whole town seems geared towards day trippers coming over from Spain. From the minute you leave immigration there are "guides" wanting you to hire them. If you do hire them make sure you agree upon a price and stand firm, cause when your tour to all their friends rug shops, souvenier stands and restaurants is over and it's time to pay them, they'll be asking for more... If you're going to Morroco head for the Imperial cities. There are rules there that wont allow the locals to approach the tourists.

NEVER SHOP ALONE

by saidsgirl

At the medina and bazzars, those crazy salespeople will tell you a horribly high price!! If at all possible, find a local person to shop with. I was too fortunate to have my Moroccan fiance with me, and he did all the bargaining. But really, watch out....and NEVER pay the first price they tell you.

Be cautious, not paranoid

by ccwyin

Depending on where you go, first contact withMoroccans can be nice or harrowing.I went via Tangier and got cheated twice in a day. Beware the persistent "guides/friendly friend". After i handed over the USD15, his "tour" became a 15mins fast walk thru a carpet shop & the medina. He stopped smiling. He dumped us in a restaurant. We had to get a kid to navigate the way out of the maze. Other scams I heard fr fellow travellers:- Nice man gets you off the train/bus to see his authentic "village". You end up in his carpet shop & pay for lodging in his house. No sight of that authentic medina. - Stranger tells you the bus you're on is not really going to its destination - got to pay extra (check with bus driver or fellow passenger).- 7 friendly youths bring you out to new town at night for disco; you end up withdrawing money from ATM & giving them (ok, maybe this is just being dumb) I would...

The Souks in Marrakech. Do not...

by zweiblumen

The Souks in Marrakech. Do not be afraid to haggle, if you don't haggle you WILL be ripped off. I am not the best haggler in the world, I bought a T-shirt with the Moroccan flag printed on the front. The stall holder wanted 150 Dirhams for it (about ý10 sterling) I managed to get it down to 110 Dirhams. I felt fairly pleased until the last day of the trip when someone else in our party got the same T-shirt after some determined haggling for only 30 Dirhams!!

great views in mountains

by nygaston

when it is raining, small oueds become big rivers. roads become very dangerous, because of big rivers. you cannot see the roads and there is stones and mood everywhere. DO NOT DRIVE during night if it rains here and if you are not experimented. it's better to be 2 cars... take all information about conditions of roads and driving risks . ask to native people. stay at hotel or safe place when you are in mountain.

Never let your credit cards...

by miyls

Never let your credit cards out of your sight, even during a transaction. I bought a plane ticket in an apparently ordinary shop, and the guy went in a back office to swipe the card. Although I only signed one receipt, my card was charged twice.

by pinganille

Riding a camel is definately fun - but quite expensive! It's normally just a little trip for a few minuttes and you can't help feeling a bit sorry for those camels. So consider it well before you go on a ride;)

by chris79

You'll probably will get hashies or pot (chisson) offered over 20 times a day in the bigger cities; dont buy any; the moroccan goverment have police officers selling pot and when you buy; you get busted. and you dont want to end up in jale over there. If you didnt ask for a guide (esp. in marrakesh);dont pay for it!!!!

Most of this should be...

by donalaba

Most of this should be common sense, but don't keep all of your money together.Keep a small amount available in the souks and be prepared to bargain. They will give you a ridiculously high price.Meet it with a ridiculously low price because they will often try to meet you in the middle. The most effective bargaining is to walk away or pull out your small amount to show that you can't offer more.If he still doesn't meet your price,go on the merchandise in the souks can usually be duplicated a few feet away and you can always go back. In the djemma el fna,be very careful about showing any money and keep your wits about you, because a feeding frenzy can start around a sucker. That being said, keep in mind that this is a poor economy and it wouldn't hurt to be a little discreet sucker. You'll enjoy it more and help some families in the process. Speaking of helping families,if you're interested in...
