Driving at Morocco.

by MITNIC

Always driving my camper van or my little buggy at Morocco, I can tell you that are not scary as people told me. I find it easy and enjoyable to drive –with low speed- at Morocco countryside. Most of the main roads are in good condition (photo 2) and only at south, south east part are roads wide enough for two vehicles- take care to do not loose the left mirror- that you mast almost stop and go out of surface, not so good for tires… (photo1).And a very few- but very few are really good. (photo 3). To visit villages out of the main – connecting cities roads- not touristy develop places, have in mind something like in photo 4 In the cities it need to be more careful- a lot of bikes and motor bikes, but in general at list car drivers respect the code. Something that you mast have on mind is, that in police control points you have to STOP until they make you a sine to go. Usually tourist...

Hire a Grande Taxi with driver to get around

by angiebabe

Grande taxis are big 6 seater diesel Mercedes cars that just run forever, easy to maintain and keep running so are prolific in Morocco for getting paying passengers from A to B generally going long distances but also not uncommon to use as short distance taxis eg from a ferry port to a bus terminal (but in those cases need to haggle or get a price before heading off as they dont have meters and the taxi drivers will take the opportunity to get some extra bucks out of you!).Grande taxi stations are generally near or next to bus stations and easy to find. If you cant find it or it is some distance then get in a petite taxi (little car taxis) to take you there.Being 6 seaters they take 6 passengers and each seat needs to be sold before they depart from the initial departure point. You can help, as locals often do too, the taxi leave earlier, and for your own comfort, especially if you want...

Travelling around South Morocco

by suvanki

This was part of an answer to a Forum questionI travelled from Marrakech to Ouarzazate by local bus (4 hours)- regular services, not the most comfortable of buses, but the scenery and the experience made up for it.Getting my ticket was 'an experience'- I think I've described it in my Ouarzazate transport tip. From Ouarzazate, I hired a guide for a day, for a tour of the Dades valley (Valley of 1,000 kasbahs)and the Gorge. It was one of my favourite days during my trip. The guide was excellent. As he lived in the area, he had a lot of 'local knowledge' I had a full day out, and probably saw and learnt a lot more than if I'd been travelling by myself. The day was quite relaxed, Hossain was quite happy to stop for me to take photos etc.Buses leave Ouarzazate for Zagora (4 hours) and Boumalne du Dades.According to my LP guide (2003)Taxis leave from outside the bus station for Agdz (DH...

By car

by sachara

The towns in Morocco are connected with each other by very good tarred roads. In 2004 we crossed Morocco in a private car, coming from Mauritania and going to Spain. We had some problems en route, but not because of the roads and signposting, but because of the 22 years old car. In 2008 we decided to hire a car to go around in the desert and kasbah area south-east of the High Atlas. We prebooked the car allready at home with www.marokkoonline. After our flight to Ouarzazate the car was brought to our hotel the next day. So from here we could start our trip to Nkob, Rissani, Merzouga, Gorge de Todra, Dades Gorges and back to Ouaarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou. We could drop off the car later in Agadir from where we had our flight back home. We liked our car. It was small and strong enough to climb. The roads were good and very well signposted too (picture 2). It was a very relaxed trip with...

Bicycle for rent

by sachara

In Marrakech it is possible to hire a bicycle at the budget hotels in the medina. I don't know what the possibilities are in other towns. It's a nice way of transportation in larger cities, if you are tired of the long walking and don't like to sit in a bus or taxi. And you are free as a bird....

Four wheel drive

by sachara

In the south and east of Morocco are very impressive desert areas. There tarred roads you can easily drive with a normal car , but there are also many scenic long distance unpaved roads and tracks between several the towns and villages. So get the real "off the beaten path" feeling, and visit these areas with a four wheel drive. If you are an experienced driver in this kind of areas you can drive yourself, but you can also book one of the many tours. We visited the area south and west of Zagora by a 4x4 trip (picture 1 & 3). In Rissani we booked a one day trip to the black desert by 4x4 before heading to Erg Chebbi (picture 4 & 5).

Donkey ride

by sachara

In the countryside the donkey is still an important mean of transportation. At marketplaces in the Ouriki valley not far from Marrakech (picture 3) and in Rissani (picture 4) I saw even big parking lots for donkeys at marketdasy. Not only in the 70s and 90s, but also in 2007 and 2008.At several places in Morocco you can make a donkeyride yourself. The nicest donkeyride I did was in the Anti Atlas to a small village in the mountains, east of Tiznit (picture 1). The route was very scenic and the villagers were very hospitable.I did also a spectacular donkey ride long time ago during my first visit in 1975 in the High Altas south of Marrakech on very narrow and steep mountainpaths. It is also possible to make a less spectacular donkeyride in the palmeraie of Tiout (picture 2) not far from Agadir and Taroudannt.

Camel ride

by sachara

In the desert in Morocco you can make a camelride for an hour or a trip for several days.Good places are Merzouga with the Erg Chebbi and the area south of Zagora. In 2008 in Erg Chebbi we made a trip by camel to a bivouac in the middle of the sanddunes where we spent the night and experienced sunset and sunrise in the desert. South of Zagora we only made a very short ride in 2001, but it is not to compare with a real cameltrip of several days (like we did the year before in the western desert of Egypt). In 2007 we made also a half day trip with a camel from the beah of Eassaouri to the village Diabat. In Morocco it is also possible to do a course in camelriding of five days in Essaouira, french sproken. You will ride on a Méhari , the white tuareg camel. See www.nimsjoe.nl
