From Spain to Morocco

by barryg23

We chose Tangier as our starting point in Morocco. We had flown from London to Gibraltar a few days previously and then crossed by ferry from Tarifa to the west. The crossing took about 30 minutes and, unlike our return journey from Marrakech airport, there were no delays with immigration. Passport checks were all handled on board during the trip. We had bought our tickets the day before though there was no queue for tickets on the day of departure. There are a number of daily crossings from Tarifa and it cost us 24 Euro each for a single ticket. You can buy tickets down at the port area in Tarifa or in the town itself.

Atlas-Blue from Marrakech - London

by barryg23

Marrakech was our last spot in Morocco and from there we needed to find a flight back to London. At the time neither Easyjet nor Ryanair were flying to Marrakech so our choice was Royal Air Maroc, British Airways or Atlas-Blue. The latter, a subsidiary of Royal Air Maroc, was by far the cheapest. A single ticket cost just over 100 Euro each, which was very reasonable given we had left it quite late to book. The flight took about four hours and I would definitely fly with Atlas-Blue again.

When Your Feet are your only Carriage

by JamalMorelli

You can't get a car into many of Morocco's old medinas... Be prepared to walk the whole thing... Bring comfortable shoes and clothes - dress nice (as you like) but make sure you've got loose enough clothes for the challenge of medina walking

Big Taxis

by DanielF

The grands taxis that are waiting for travellers in every Moroccan city or town will take you from one place to another for little money, but this means of transport is only advisable for people who are really are fond of getting in close contact with the locals and who do not mind the adventurous Moroccan way of driving. These big cars (usually old mercedes) will not depart until they are cramped with passengers (two in the front plus the driver and four in the rear). Prices are fixed, but as a foreigner you will probably have to bargain. For the sake of your own comfort, I suggest that you buy at least two places: the taxi will leave earlier and you will have more room during the trip.

Taking the train

by DanielF

Trains are quiet comfortable and reliable in Morocco, but the railway network is not very developed. From Casablanca you can travel by train to the North up to Tanger, to the West up to Fes or to the South up to Marrakesh. There are no speed trains and the trips take longer that it would be expected for similar distances in most countries of Western Europe, so relax and admire the landscape.

Driving in Morocco

by DanielF

It is possible to drive one's car into Morocco. There are several ferries a day connecting South Spain and Northern Morocco. The main departure ports are Algeciras, Tarifa and Gibraltar and they arrive to Tangier or Ceuta (a Spanish enclave in Morocco). It is important to be aware that the Summer exodus of the large community of Moroccan workers in Western Europe generates agglomerations and large queues to cross the Strait on the peak days, which are definitely to avoid. If you want to avoid the hassle, it is also possible to rent a car in Morocco. Roads are good in the central area of the country (around Casablanca, Rabat, Tanger, Marrakesh, Fes...), but if you want to go to the deep south, you will need a 4x4. Driving in Morocco requires a lot of attention, because roads are often full of all kinds of vehicles, people and animals, like these turkeys on sale by a road near Casablanca.

Taxi

Travelling by taxi in Morocco is a good option for short and long distances. Price is calculated according the distance and for the whole car.I found always correct price!Pay attention: they are used to put 6 people inside a car.

O.N.C.F. - Getting around Morocco by train

by Bernhadette

An easy and cheap way to travel around Morocco is by train. The trains are run by the "Office National des Chemins de Fer" (O.N.C.F.). Timetables and train connections can be found at: www.oncf.ma/scripts/horaires1.asp (in French or Arabic)Information about the O.N.C.F. fares: www.oncf.ma/scripts/tarifs1.asp (in French or Arabic)For people who travel often or at certain times, there are special offers, for example the "week-end-ticket" ("billet week-end"). For offers, conditions and prices look at: www.oncf.ma/voyages/produits.htm (in French or Arabic)

Transport in Morocco By Train

Trains in Morocco are among the best in Africa; fares are cheap and there are plenty of high-speed, air-conditioned trains available. You rarely have to book in advance, which is good since you can't book trains outside of Morocco. Trains travel between Tangier, Meknes, Fez, Oujda, Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech. The Moroccan national train service ONCF lists all the schedules and fares. There are overnight train services available between Tangier and Marrakech. They depart Tangier at 11 pm every night. For information in English Triotours has some good advice and lists schedules as well !!
