Warning level-Weak...ReligioPolitical 'Enthusiasm'

by JamalMorelli

A tourist was killed in the medina last year by a man who believed he was doing what he felt was 'right' in the way of Islam - and though this is way more the exception than the rule - steer clear of getting yourself into angry conversations or wandering near mosques while wearing innappropriate clothes which may comprimise your faith (or lack of it)To the traveling prospector/ex pat/tourist shopping for riads: Buying property in Morocco doesn't not make you Moroccan and it doesn't make Morocco whereever you came from. Behave or at least know your behavior is being watched, no matter how distant it seems. To the tourist/riad owner/alc stud using his visa as a 'developing country' sex meal ticket:Taking pictures of people (and exclusively women) with or without their consent (or even wandering around with a big camera) is dangerous. People don't know what you will do with the photos, etc....

Stats on Prejudice against Jews? My Response

by JamalMorelli

(Warning or Danger Tips are designed to warn travelers of problems they may encounter while traveling.)POST: "95% of Moroccans do fully believe the propaganda they are exposed to, that the west is evil, 9/11 was a CIA / Israeli conspiracy etc. If you try discussing it with them, none will admit that Israel has a legitimate right to survive like any other country on earth..."My response: Your statement is incendiary (which is what I like about it)It's also embarrasingly and egregiously wrong. (which is what I don't like about it) Now, you found your way on to the forum. Find your way on to the wagon of "google" searching and learn about Morocco's relation to Israel. America as an independent nation was first recognized by Morocco. Warm relations between the two have existed for years. Trust me, boo. If they thought the west was actually evil, they'd do something about it. And then it's...

Feeling singled out Rage - The Single Female, etc.

by JamalMorelli

Feeling singled out Rage - The Single Female, etc. Maybe you are whiter or blacker than a Moroccan. Maybe you are shyer or more outspoken than a Moroccan. Maybe you are a free wheeling outspoken blond (or whatever) woman in your twenties, a long haired man with piercings , an crippled beer-loving eskimo travelling during Ramadan who is also openly gay. Bottomline: You aren't Moroccan and the way you look, you are concerned that nobody will think you are either. You feel different here - for you, maybe the word "SUBMISSION" never had anything to do with Islam, but only conjured up images of "Bottom's Nite" at a local B+D club, or means chewing leather for an ungrateful husband, or means holding a purse for your non-time-conscious wife. The Moroccan world and it's difference is starting to get to you in a way you are not enjoying. And now, here in Morocco, you are becoming angry. You feel...

Being Gay in Morocco - Not a problem

by JamalMorelli

Quite a few Moroccan People laugh at it, then there is even alot of otherwise sensible folks who think it is a disease, and still Muslims and other People of the Book here who say "When two men have sex, the Throne of God shakes.""(No comment.)Obviously, we are light-years away from Post-Porn Communities in Amsterdam, and Gay Libbers in SF and NO. People who are homosexual essentially will live in the closet, in the small communities that accept them, and (if they have good government jobs) absolutely in a suffocating silence, in secret. That said, my gay pals from the states have never complained of any abuse to me during their travels to Morocco. I ain't gay - but some of my best pals in the States and other parts of the world are queer, and I must say, listening to SOME folks here in Fes tell me how gays are destined for hellfire can be upsetting, and cause for me to get settled into...

Prostitutes and You, the Happy Traveler

by JamalMorelli

I think having sex with them would be a bad idea. Reasons: I don't think emotional satisfaction is what these gals are about, alot of them look really foul, I'd be worried about their teeth popping out at critical moments, AIDS (SIDA) is a nagging problem in Morocco - and I think my Casa buddies have let me know that the pre and post-sex haggling stuff can be quite the anti-aphrodisiac.JamJam's solutions for the fellas while hot and travelling in Morocco: 1) Make love to your wife, if she is on vacation with you, and, I guess, she wants to. 2) Make love to someone who may not 'exactly' be your wife, but maybe your neighbor's wife, who you know doesn't have aids and won't charge anything, or at least, won't haggle.3) Make love over the phone with your wife, lover or trusted phone sex worker.There. That was generous of me. As usual, ladies, reverse the sex in my advice for your own use....

Your New Glue or Petrol Sniffing Habit in Morocco

by JamalMorelli

I'm worried about you going to Morocco and picking up a glue habit.**** You don't seem to have much will power left right now and your eyes are getting a little weak from all your internet searching - how will you know who slips what onto your napkin, baby?In Morocco: Glue sniffing has no hotlines, no peer groups, no GSA 12 steps here in Morocco - yet, amazingly, it is a real addiction that affects little kids and big (usually poor) folk. It seems that the drug claims you for broke, since everyone I have ever seen addicted to it looks like Fagan's kids (or Fagan) Sometimes the glue sniffers act weird, sometimes they are as verbally violent (possibly in your language) as any gangsta rap.Donate to this respected organization to lessen the 'danger' here as well as help the kids from avoided such a sad brain damaging habit: Bayti: Care for the Street Kids of Morocco JAMJAM sez: Steer clear...

Telling a Guide (or most anyone) to F*ck Off

by JamalMorelli

Yelling "F*CK OFF!": Might work in the States or the UK or somewhere in Europe. Will not work at all here and is generally assured you will be responded in double.Be firm, be yourself, be respectful. If you have someone or a guide nagging you or tagging along, tell them you have a family in Fes. Idriss is a good name. Or, tell them you are Russian. If you really have your sh*t together, speak Arabic. Works like a fart in an crowded elevator. They won't waste their time with someone making as much as anyone else in North Africa. But unless you are actually tough (and not relying on someone tough to save you), don't count on anyone pulling you out of the mess you made when you decided to tell a Maghreb Romeo or guide to loudly f*ck off. Only a few (and this includes cops) will immediately sympathize.Say this instead:HEAR MOROCCAN ARABIC: Salaam alikoomHEAR MOROCCAN ARABIC: la bas? HEAR...

Disrespecting the Name of Muhammed or Allah

by JamalMorelli

Now - the name of the prophet may come up in conversation. If you have to use his name you really should add "Peace be upon him" in Arabic you would add "AH-ee SAH-LAH-Too Wah SAH-LAAM" or say it in English.A personal red light:Let's say you are Christian or a Jew -You say, "Hold yer hamar, Hot Poppa JamJam. I ain't stooping to conquer, he ain't my prophet."I say "First, my dear You, don't use ain't so much, even if you are just sample dialogue. Secondly, you can say this after any of the prophets names, Jesus, Moses, Ezra and the Holy lot of them."You say "For example, I could say 'Tell me what do you think of Moses, peace be upon him.'"I say, "Yep."Likewise, if you use the name of ALLAH you add, "exalted and high" or the arabic "SOO-BANA wa TAH-LA" A serious amount of bonusey chocolatey goodness will come your way if you can remember this tip. Or even to remember not to say their names...

Toubkal Travel Questions

by JamalMorelli

For some reassurance, I have pictures of myself doing that climb in December without a guide or special equipment - a trek in the lower parts of High Atlas in December is so do-able.I make several trips to Sidi Shamharush throughout the year in all sorts of conditions. I like to be cautious, but here I will say from six years of experience of climbing even in the cold period, that you are still okay for the beginning of December.I'll say that the only difficulty is that you need to be a bit time concious as the sun makes a guest appearance at that time and then disappears again behind the mountains offering what I consider to be not enough light to take in the whole day. Make sure to start a bit in the dark - it should take about 2 hours to get to the first little shrine/villlage of Si Shamharush.

Supercheap Crap Buses like TransGhazalla, etc

by JamalMorelli

They suck for comfort, convience, safety, time, security and as a by-product, any semblance of peace of mind.If you must use buses, go CTM or Supratours. But I would prefer you take the train. I do worry. You will recognize the bad buses by the extremely colorful outside, like a child's school notebook, sugary drink or candy which also sucks.
