Traffic Accidents - Driving in Morocco pt 2

by JamalMorelli

Source: Bureau of Consular Affairs In the event of a traffic accident, including accidents involving injuries, the parties are required to remain at the scene and not move their vehicles until the police have arrived and documented all necessary information. The police emergency services telephone number is 190. Photos by Jamal Morelli, uploaded at Studio Shamharush

Driving It Down, Speeding in your Rental Car, Cops

by JamalMorelli

Unlike the States with cops behind the bushes on the highway, and the UK with it's omnipresent CCTV culture, the rules of the road of not carefully observed here. People constantly drive through red lights, down the wrong street, passing you on one way streets, etc. But that won't stop a cop who is just hanging out directing traffic to single you out. If you speak french and arabic, DON'T. In fact, speak Eskimo or Fuggallese. The longer the cop tries to extort money from you, the more the easy targets drive by and the more likely it is you'll get out of there without paying anything. Never pay over 100 DH. He has a real looking tickets for 400 and I've seen tickets higher. I know it's scary but stand your ground and don't pay. You'll get out there because the cop doesn't have a legal leg to stand on.Say you are willing to go to jail - this means a meeting with his Sup which is not what...

Theft, Safety, Harassment - U.S. Dept of State

by JamalMorelli

This is a problem - Stay up to date with the website below(SOURCE: U.S. Department of StateBureau of Consular Affairs)CRIME: Crime in Morocco is a serious concern, particularly in the major cities and tourist areas. Aggressive panhandling, pick pocketing, purse snatching, theft from vehicles and harassment of women are the most frequently reported crimes. These are more likely to occur in crowded market areas, transportation centers, parks and beaches. Additionally, criminals have used weapons, primarily knives, during some street robberies and burglaries. These have occurred day and night in isolated places or areas less frequented by visitors. It is always best to have a travel companion and utilize taxis from point to point, particularly at night and when moving about unfamiliar areas. Residential break-ins also occur and have on occasion turned violent, but most criminals look for...

Taking Pictures of Women on the Street - ATTENTION

by JamalMorelli

It's already something you should get permission for with men but with women it is a real cultural disgrace to shoot pictures of women without permission.Do a Google search on BELGUEL to understand the sensitivity of what I am saying. If someone seems happy or poses for you - no worries.

Terrorism - Weak on the Danger Radar

by JamalMorelli

We've got the "Ansar Al Mehdi" as our current TV interest and some aspects of our daily lives disrupter. So, I'd opine in favor of the informal connection with Al Qaeda - besides their overt and normal rumblings you can read about in the mainstream press. I feel that the tidal wake from the civilian deaths in Lebanon/Syria and then immediate emotional (and financial) outpouring that took place from the ground up here in Morocco is not yet at it's peak...

Guide To Eating Seafood (IMPORTANT!)

by RusskiPower

Seafood sold at hawkers' stalls is not kept on ice and whatever is left over recycled until it gets sold. So here are 4 tips to eating seafood in Morocco:1) if you are not vaccinated against at least Hepatitis A - skip seafood altogether;2) if your stomach is known to be on the weaker side - stick to more upscale establishments;3) never eat the head - fish starts rotting from it;4) choose for the more popular fish/seafood types (normally stuff from the menu du jour, cheaper varieties) - they are less likely to sit long on display in the sweltering heat.

Casablanca Airport Hasslorama

by RusskiPower

When departing from the Casablanca airport -- the most desorganized I've ever seen in my life - you will need to fill in a "dis/embarkation card". There will be uniformed customs officers who will be "helping" you to do that and then ask for money. Feel free to ignore those, what they are doing is illegal. Also, allow ample time before your departure. There is only one scanning machine at the entrance to the airport from the railway station and everyone has to go through it (takes yonkers of time). Also, there will be 8 or 9 (NO KIDDING!) passport checks before you can board your plane (and they are anythign but fast!)Nothing is clearly signed in this ariport, so you will be sure to spend some time looking for your check-in counter, then boarding gate, etc. On the brighter side, you will feel like inside a insane computer game.Get rid of your dirham ahead of time: there is no bureau de...

Ramadan Stupidity...Your Inner Dumbass pt1

by JamalMorelli

We don't eat food from dawn till dusk. You don't need to know why. You don't need to respect it either. But it's my duty at this hour to tell you an easy tip - Those pissed looks you may be getting from hungry, thirsty, and cigarette-less people while you eat at on a busy street corner for everyone to see...can be avoided by taking your meal to a less conspicious place.
