    King Hassan II

by CliffClaven Written Aug 24, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When old Cliffie was in Casablanca, King Hassan II was too busy putting down rebellions to build a mighty mosque. There was an attempted coup in 1971, when an army general led an attack during a reception at the royal palace. More than 100 people died but the king escaped in the confusion. The following year a Moroccan air force fighter fired on the King's personal jet. Hassan II is reputed to have radioed the fighter pilot to tell him the king was dead and ask him to let the plane land safely. Once he had seen off the opposition, the king turned his talents to good works. If you want to know more about Islam's second largest mosque, take a look at Krystynn's page on Casablanca. Thanks for the pic, Krys!

    SHOPPING!

IF you can, try and AVOID the tourist shops here in Casablanca.

Yes, it is hardly ever the tourist souvenir shops I find terribly exciting. And the things they sell there cost a bomb (even after bargaining!). What I would humbly recommend is that you head straight to the souks, drug stores and specialty shops. These are the places that will offer creative treasure-trove of goodies. Really.

When I find a shopping spot I really like, the address, telephone and fax number is noted in my digital diary. This way, I can return on my next trip, re-order specialties by mail, if necessary, and I can share my best finds with my girlfriends back home when they go off traveling.

And finally, strike when the iron is hot! What do I mean? Well, many times I would buy 2 or 3 of the same item that really catches my fancy. When I go back home to Singapore, these treasured items will be stored inside my gift drawer ready for special occasions and holiday gift-giving.

Your friends will definitely LOVE you for being so resourceful and brilliant. :-D And besides, things here in Morocco are REALLY CHEAP.

You can buy souvenir items like miniature 'Ali Baba'-shoes, miniature Moroccan red caps (A VT member told me it's called 'fez'... Thanks, Larsy), Moroccan kaftans, Moroccan mint tea, Moroccan ethnic dolls... etc. I even managed to buy name chops (of my name) written in ARABIC! All of them for a steal. See? The choices are simply endless!

    CASABLANCA BAR
This bar is the place for those who try to find something in the city that reminds them of the movie (which was actually filmed in Tangier not Casablanca). This bar has a very cosy atmosphere with waiters dressed Humphrey-Bogart style and a pianist playing songs known from the movie.

As a means of entertainment, instead of going out night-clubbing, even though you're in Tangier, rent a copy of this timeless movie.

Little touches like this enhance the travel experience. Didn't Bob Hope do a ROAD TO MOROCCO? or surely you;ll be able to find DEBBIE DOES MOROCCO?Don't count on it.

Giving you some perspective on how very close Tangier is to Spain, picture this in your mind as you move toward the end of this page, seeing the ship and ferry as well as the Straits of Gibraltar.

On a clear day, you can see forever!

There is a good market here,
but look around before you buy,
shop keepers here know their skills.
    Some thousand people live here,
and in one or two spots,
    true beauty occurs.
