Pack light but comfy!

by Zlur

Backpacks definately to travel & light haversack for during the day. As Fes is one of the oldest cities in Morocco, you are expected to respect their religion and wear clothing that covers your shoulders and legs (especially women). It can get pretty hot walking around the souks all day long as most of them are closed in, so it's best if you wear light layers. With regards to shoes - make sure they are comfortable since walking is your only way of getting around the old city. There was a pharmacy next to our hotel but it never seemed to be open whenever we passed by?! So try and come prepared. There are no westernised shops as such in the old city so if you would need any photography equipment or toiletries it's best to stock up from home or go to the new town (Fes el Djedid) and try your luck there.

Compass

I think that the best way to appreciate Fes El Bali is to simply dive into it. You'll get lost. And due to the narrowness of the streets and the height of the buildings, the position of the sun will generally not be readily perceptible. Take a compass, & you can at least keep heading in more or less the right direction....you'll get out eventually!

It's modest enough, and you are not cooking in your clothes. If you are planning to stay for a while, you can get a jellabah. You can get almost everything you need in a large supermarket. Batteries for your camera are a must, because you cannot be sure they have them there. They do sell them in stores, but they don't sell all models. You should pack your swimming suit - there are several pools mainly frequented by Westerners or young Moroccans where you can swim, and two towns with thermal springs are...
