Getting Around Wilaya de Fes

If you opt for the train then you will stop in the Ville Nouvelle; roughly a 10-minute walk from the hotels around Place Mohammed V. If you will be staying in Fes el Bali (Old city) either take a petit taxi or bus #10 or #47 to Bab Boujeloud, where most of the old city's hotels can be found. Bab Boujeloud can also be used as a pick-up point as it's easily found; it marks the end of Fes el Jedid and the start of Fes el Bali.

Be careful of unofficial taxi drivers who hang around the train station and charge the wrong rates for a trip into town. The standard fare to Bab Boujeloud should cost no more than 10dirhams per person.

Train from Tanger to Fes is 141 Dirham ( 1st class )
From Fes to Rabar is 105.50 Dirham ( 1st class also )
I talked to a girl at information desk in train station and she said at that moment ( March 2006 ) if you guys travel with 16 persons up you will get 50% discount so dont forget to ask her first before you buy ticket.

Petti taxi in Fes is RED color ( but in Tanger is blue ) Meter in taxi is winding...it's quite low technology or they try to keep it like that? We took taxi from our hotel "Ibis'' to The Medina for 13.8 Dirham ... I cant remember how much it starts by meter.

No motorized vehicles are allowed in the medina. Some vendors make due with bicycles and pushcarts, but the most popular form of transporting cargo is atop a donkey's back. Every so often you will hear a cry to yield for an oncoming donkey. It is best to flatten oneself against the sides of the passageway or risk being flattened on the pavement by the donkey and its master. Cargo donkeys yield to no pedestrian, it is a hard and fast rule of life in the medina.

"Petit Taxi" - plenty of them - little red Fiat Uno type. All with identical rooftop carriers.
taxi's are cheap, at least the little red ones, but be sure the driver has the meter running.
if you need a drive outside the city border - you can ask for a "Mercedes type" - but no meter is running - determine a fixed price !

Fes lies 60 kilometers from Meknes and is a one hour trip
By bus you pay 16 Dirham per person.
Grand Taxis normally take 6 people so we had to pay 6x16 dirhams to have our own private taxi for the five of us.
It's much more comfortable that way

It is about a five hour train ride from Tangier to Fes and it is very pretty scenery for most of the way (no desert, surprisingly to me). The two hour ferry ride, however, can be a nightmare, especially heading back to Algeciras. First, aggressive hawkers will stalk you wherever you go. Everyone at the dock seems to thrive on your confusion, even having you pay them to fill out a simple customs form. And the ride over there in our case was very full of Moroccans loaded down with goods, which made customs and just getting off the boat long and difficult. I understand it is always like that--not sure how it can be avoided.

For getting around Fes, taxis are very cheap and pretty much your only option besides walking.
