Gite Atlas a great place to stay

Moshe,looking miserable, descending Mt Toubkal

Favorite thing: The Gite Atlas is 10 minute walk from the centre of Imlil, high on the hill that overlook the valley.
Rooms are big and there's a beautiful terrace and indoor lounge for winter nights.
The roof terrace is massive and sometime, in high season can be used as over-spill for sleeping under the stars.
Prices are reasonable and mountain views are excellent!

Fondest memory: Getting up early and setting off to Toubkal, despite a gastric bug....

Going to climb Mount Toubkal

Favorite thing: The mountain scene and freedom after the intensity and noise of Marrakesh.
The berber main street and the simple gites make this place a good base for trekking and climbing in the high atlas.

A word of advice: most trekkers coming to Imlil intending to climb Mount Toubkal, arrive from Marrakesh, almost at sea level, then spend one (sometime not even that..) night in Imlil 1700m, then climb to the Refuge at 3100m , targeting the summit (4167) the following day. Well, no wonder about 30-40% of trekkers never make it to the summit, two day trek from 0-4167m above sea level is tough.
My advice is sleep an extra night in the tiny pilgrim's station/hamlet of Sidi Hamharoush, the place has 2-3 guest houses with basic rooms, a nice little cafe and is the hub of the Mule drivers. Most importantly, at 2600m, it is breaking the climb from Imlil nicely and the following day the Refuge is 4-5 hours away and +600m rather than 8-9 tough hours and +1400m.... make sense, no?
Enjoy the trek and never under estimate the ability of the high Atlas to throw a thunder storm and 5c weather when at the valley you just left 2-3 hours ago it was 35c.. bring warm clothes and poncho/soft shell even in August!

Fondest memory: Sitting a whole day under a vine terrace, sipping water and nursing a real dodgy tummy....

Fondest memory: Atlas Trekking Equipment Shop -Imlil - Morocco

Equipment shop, Atlas Trekking Equipment was set up by Mohamed Aztat and Paul, two mountaineering friends and colleagues. We both lead and guide groups in the mountains and both wish to share our experiences with others.

The shop is set in the centre of Imlil village (see map) and offers trekkers the opportunity to buy or hire trekking equipment.

3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: In a corner of the car-park, at the bottom of the village, opposite the Hotel Beau Soleil is a useful CAF (Club Alpin Francaise) information hut where you can get information on the latest conditions on Toubkal as well as hire guides and mules and arrange accommodation in Toubkal. The guy here also changed our sterling for us, which was a real help as we were very short of money. They will also tell you the fair prices to pay for crampons, guides, mules, etc.
