Schools / Offices / Public Buildings, Marrakesh
More than most cities in the world, the tourist office in Marrakech can be extremely useful. Maps are unreliable, people can tell you lies ("it's shut" or "it's closed down") and getting anything done by yourself can take forever. At the tourist at Marrakech you can get mostly impartial advice, although it wouldn't be Morocco without at least a little soft sell of his cousin's adventure holiday business.
Here you can find maps, and also hire personal guides (250 dirhams for a half day tour). That's of course if you can find the tourist office - nobody I asked had a clue where it was and it's really hard to find on the map! It's right in the centre of Gueliz (not in the Medina where it might be more helpful) not far from the train station. From the plaza on Place Novembre 16, walk up Avenue Mohamed V (it's the big road that runs between McDonald's and Maroc Telecom) walk until you find a triangle of shaded concrete on your left. This is a little park where people relax. It's directly in front of the tourist office.
Or get a taxi - I actually did find one who knew where it was.
