General Customs
Marrakech is predominantly a Muslim city; therefore it is essential that visitors opt for attire that is not offensive and revealing. Modesty by wearing a cardigan over the shoulders when visiting places of worship or religious significance is most appreciated. Swimsuits, shorts etc are best worn inside hotel premises, by the pool. Smoking is practised widely and it is customary to offer cigarettes in social gatherings. Traditions and customs should be respected, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. Eating, drinking and smoking during daylight should be indulged inconspicuously during this time.

Mint tea is the drink of choice in Morocco. It is made by boiling water with green tea leaves and fresh mint. Once the pot is boiled, it is poured ceremoniously from a great height into the tea glasses. You then add the appropriate number of sugar cubes.
The sugar tends to enhance and sharpen the yummy minty taste. So if you're not into sugar, just add 1/4 of a cube like me!!

Relax with tea.....
Moroccans love to sit with their coffee and watch the world go by! As the weather is so hot at times, it is lovely to sit and relax and watch the water sellers, people rushing by, the snake charmers etc etc I found that the Debois cafe overlooking the Square sold a lovely cup of English breakfast tea! I don't like coffee....apart from the delicious Moroccan mint tea..

Henna Ladies: The best Henna Lady in morocco?
So for my last two trips I have gone back to the same lady, she charges what equals only about £5.00, and does a very good henna tatoo. I'd advise you to wait and have it done at the end of your holiday.

Some people will tell you the henna is black, but later that evening when the henna falls off you will soon realise that it is weal brown henna and will mark your hand for a couple of days max....it might last for two swimming pool dips, and doesn't look very nice on your hand!

However the lady I found is lovely! This year, I looked for her and eventually found her, I arranged for my hotel to write her a letter in Arabic. She couldn't read but people on Stall 22 read it to her, she was really pleased because the letter was praising her work and told her how pleased I was last year.

Myblack henna tatoo lasted approx 30 days, you have to be careful with black henna, it can be very powerful and damage/burn your skin. However this ladies work is very good.

Animal Rights
The treatment of animals by the people of Marrakesh left me feeling uneasy about their attitude towards the creatures we share the planet with. The man we witnessed who beat his donkey to get up when it had collapsed in the road. The so called snake charmers in Jemaa-el-Fna Square, the snakes who's mouths were sewn up, fangs torn out and left out in the sun for at least twelve hours every day without shade so Western tourists can pay the so called charmers to take photos of the snakes. The monkeys with muzzles on their mouths and put on tourists so someone can take a photo to demand money.

Though Morocco has been independent for over 50 years, there are still plenty of signs that it was once a French colony. Practically every town of major size ahs a Ville Nouvelle, built by the French, while in some large cities there are Maisons de Culture and other French buildings. In Marrakech, I spotted these street signs (see picture) on Avenue Mohammed V, just outside the medina, which are very like the signs you see in French streets.

Bees
Walking past a pastry shop it was easy to mistake the flying objects covering the sweet pastries as flies. On closer inspection they were honey bees. of course why not ! The honey makes the pastries taste delicious and without the bees there would be no honey !

Women: do not hang out by...
Women: do not hang out by yourself at night unless you are prepared to get harassed ALL THE TIME. Nothing 'bad' will happen to you as this is a culture of very friendly people and generally a safe country, but you will get gawked at, flirted with, teased and maybe even touched if you are in a crowd.
