Alcohol Shop in Ville Nouvelle

Despite the huge growth in tourism in Marrakech, it's still surprisingly difficult to find places selling alcohol, especially in the medina. On our last night in the city, we wanted to get some wine for a meal on our rooftop terrace. The only place we could find it was in a shop in the Ville Nouvelle, which we remembered from our last visit to the city two years ago. Shops selling alcohol often have barred up windows, in a similar way to how sex shops in Western Countries are often identified. Nevertheless, our shop had a good selection of wines and we picked up two bottles of Guerrouane (from a region near Meknes) for 34 Dh each.

The Local Rose

Good, Morrocan and Wine are not 3 words I would usually expect to see in the same sentance, however I must say that the local wines that we sampled on our trip were actually quite good.

On a hot day, a chilled glass ( or two ) of the local rose, Gris Guerrooane, was extremely pallatable, and the local white, Medallion, made for a very quaffable white.

We did not try any reds as we had taken some bottles with us, but the staff at the riad advised us that the Medallion red was supposedly very nice, if somewhat expensive.

All of these wines can be purchased at the supermarkets in Guliez
