Towns /Cities / Sights around Marrakesh: Ouriki, market day
  • Tip Rating:
  • We were very excited to have a look in this village at the marketday. When we walked around, it was as if we were back in another era. These pictures are not from 1975, but made in 2000.
It was very crowded in the village indeed, but it was also easy to find some more quiet places at the edges of the village with only a few donkeys and local men around.

August 2003, the pool was empty due to problems. you can see some people fixing holes in the pool.
Don't be frightned but this is a very interesting monument. This pool usually is full of water and also full of hungry fishes. I wonder where did they put the fishes to fix the pool?

    La Criee Berbere
  • Tip Rating:
  • La Criee Berbere, or Souq Zrabia, is the old slave market. Black African slaves, mostly from Guinea and Sudan, were sold here until the French took over the city in 1912. Slave markets were held at auctions here on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. In the early 1900s prices here ranged from £5 for a small boy up to £150 for a beautiful woman.

Today the market has been taken over by carpet salesmen. There are still auctions here, but they are held by Berbers, who bring their hand-made carpets and kelims in from the surrounding villages.

    Just wandering around the backstreets!

I love just wandering around the backstreets of any town or city, and 'getting lost' Never knowing what's around the next corner, and finding those 'hidden gems' Also it doesn't cost anything, and often my memories (and photo's ) last longer than any souvenirs.- oh and it's good exercise too!

Marrakesh was a fantastic place, to wander 'off the beaten path' with it's maze of narrow winding streets. As a lone female, I felt quite safe, and spent most days wandering around the Medina and Mellah areas.

Each corner revealed something new, both on street level, and above. Either in the different architecture, or in local activity.

The boys in the picture were one example of local life, which I encountered, they stopped playing football, and a game pushng this wheel around, to chat with me, before carrying on with their game.

I especially (for some strange reason, but since being on VT realise that others have the same interest!) like old doorways, and Marrakesh has old doorways aplenty!

A few times, I was re- directed to 'The Square' I wasn't sure if the locals thought I was lost and this was where I was looking for, or they didn't want me (and my camera) 'on their land'

"...It is designed as a summer escape- remember that Marrakech is like an oven through mid-summer- with both orchards and olive groves. The pavilion and the basin existed from earlier times, but the present structure was set up in the middle of the 19th century by Sultan Adu r-Rahman..."
    info taken from website: http://lexicorient.com/morocco/marrakech14.htm

I samehow have a whole different story that a friend of mine told me when we visit the monument. He told me this is the monument to the army that died in some kind of war that I dont really remember which.

    Dyers' Souk
  • Tip Rating:
  • Souq Sebbaghine or Souk des Teinturiers is the dyers' souk. It is a colourful place where sheets of freshly dyed material hang down all around you. You will probably invited in by one of the shops to watch the dying process, where they might then try to sell you something, like an indigo blu Berber headdress. But, the sales pressure in this little souk is nowhere near as great as in some of the bigger souks surrounding it. You may also be invited to climb up to a roof terrace to get an aerial view of the souk. If you take any photos there though, they will expect a tip.

    TOMBOUCTOU 52 JOURS...
  • Tip Rating:
  • TOMBOUCTOU 52 JOURS (Zagora)
This world famous sign showing the way to Tombouctou (Mali) through the Sahara Desert in 52 days by camel is still there, though it needs to be repainted urgently!
It's in the main street, in the centre of the town, by a huge new municipal building. If you don't find it, ask, everybody knows it.

    Overnight Trips to Essaouira
  • Tip Rating:
  • Essaouira is a good choice for an overnight trip from Marrakech. You could, at a push, make it a day trip but as it's such a nice town, it's worth staying overnight or longer. It's a laid back town, with a nice beach and port and it provides a striking contrast to the bustle of Marrakech. Buses run from the Supratours station, just beyond the main train station on Avenue Hassan II and the journey takes about three hours

Towns /Cities / Sights around Marrakesh: Essaouira,,,,The Peaceful City,,,!!: )
  • Tip Rating:
  • Essaouira is a lovely contrast to Marrakech in that it is a very relaxed sea-side town and feels more like Africa meets Portugal than the very Arabic Marrakech. In comparison to other resorts on the coast Essaouira is unspoilt and still very charming. It takes about 2 hours to reach it from Marrakech along a straight road across desert-like scenery. The town itself focuses around the old fortified harbour where you can eat grilled sardines freshly from the boats and there are also plenty of seafood restaurants in the town. Wood-carving is famous in this area and the town also has a lovely old souk to explore. Essaouira still has quite a hippy atmosphere as popular in the sixties with Hendrix and the surfing crowd. The beach is a huge crescent of sand enclosing the more modert part of the town. The beach can get quite windy at times and so is popular for windsurfing but is also lovely for long walks in and around the town.
