Local Cuisine: Tajine
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Tajine is Morocco's favourite dish and it is usually served on an earthenware platter with a triangular lid on top of it! It is a sort of stew made from vegetables and meats and when we had a tajine, we had a mutton tajine! It surely was lovely and VERY delicious!

Local Cuisine: Great view of Jamaa El Fna
  • Tip Rating:
  • As the name suggests the restaurant has a terrace from where you can see much of the Jamaa El Fna, there is one opposite with a better view higher up, but I can't remember the name.

I tried a prawn salad which tasted ok, but on reflection I don't think it was a wise choice, I didn't feel well for the next two days.
They will probably serve Western food aswell if you're stomach can't handle any more Moroccan food.

Local Cuisine: Chill out, relax and enjoy the mint tea
  • Tip Rating:
  • I can't remember the name of the restaurant that I went into, but it's off one of the side streets from Jamaa El Fna. I imagine most traditional Moroccan restaurants are like this, with comfortable couches to eat on, the specialities being cous-cous and tagine along with the very fragrant mint tea which is a must.

I really enjoyed the tagine, I think I had lamb tagine along with sweet bread. I couldn't leave without giving a tip.

Local Cuisine: A dinner with Show
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • It will probably not be your favorite restaurant in Marrakesh for the food or the atmosphery, but a dinner at 'Chez Ali' is highly recommended for the people who want a first immersion in the Moroccan folk music.

The place is actually a kind of a 'Moroccan Disneyland', a huge complex where traditional Moroccan folklore is performed and a final show leaves tourists astonished and includes a Moroccan fantasia (horse riding show) and even fireworks. Dinner is served in traditional haimas or dessert tents.

Although it is all in all very touristy, most people do not leave not dissapointed.

The fixed menu is composed of the most famous Moroccan dishes, like harira (beans soup), pastilla, cous-cous and thé à la menthe.

Local Cuisine: don´t forget to try COUS COUS...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Moroccan cuisine is one of the finest in the world. Even if you're traveling on a budget, splurge one night for a feast in a deluxe restaurant. Be sure bastilla (a dish that features pigeon cooked in filo dough with nuts and honey) is on the menu, and don't be put off just because it contains pigeon! Also look for harira soup, the traditional peasant garbanzo-and-noodle soup (it's spicy). We really like touajen (a meat or chicken stew) or hout (a fish stew), mchoui (roast mutton) and djaja mahamara (chicken stuffed with almonds, raisins and couscous). Couscous, a semolina staple, is available with most meals if you ask for it. Meals are eaten with the right hand—don't even pass food with the left hand. Tradition holds that you should be seated on floor cushions. In tourist areas, Western-style eating utensils are available.

Local Cuisine: The most excellent buffet
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This buffet was in our (LP) guide book; they said "it was twice as expensive and more than twice as good" (as Hotel Ali buffet) and they were right!
Giant layout of local foods, including; the omnipresent tajine's, cous cous, other foods who's names I've forgotten (or never knew) and the absolutely brilliant pastilla - this one was chicken, unfortunately, not pigeon (or so I was told).
The atmosphere was very nice (they sat us in the back) and so was the staff.

    Pastilla!!!!!

Local Cuisine: Restaurant in Hotel Foucauld
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We stayed one night in Hotel Foucauld before setting off again for the Atlas mountains and, as they only did half-board option, we had all our meals in the hotel. Dinner was an excellent all-you-can eat buffet with a big selection of dishes. I was almost full after two plates of starters though I did make room for pastilla, a Moroccan speciality, made with pigeons and almond, which I was trying for the first time. Drinks are not included in the price though but otherwise it's great value. Other main courses on offer included typical Moroccan dishes like couscous, and tagine, and non-Moroccan dished like spaghetti bolognaise

    Local Cuisine: Restaurant du Progres
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant du Progres, on rue Bani Marine, south of Djemaa el Fna, is a good value restaurant in the heart of the city. It was almost full on the time we visited though they did find us a table beside an elderly French couple. There were quite a few set menus on offer but we decided to order a la carte and it worked out about he same rice. We had olives and salad du variete for starters. We then shared a chicken couscous for mains as Ruth wasn't too hungry. All this came to about 70 Dh, a very reasonable price. The restaurant is easy to find: walk through the small archway in Djemaa el-Fna to get to rue Bani Marine, then walk past the line of mopeds and continue down the street.

We made two day trips into the High Atlas and of course we had to eat something during the day.

The first day we had a ‘grand taxi’ and our driver recommended a small restaurant along the road in the Berber village of Ijoukak. Tajines are simmering the whole, but we ordered a Berber omelette. In no time they were served in a frying pan and it was simple but delicious. (I have to admit I wouldn’t have stopped at such a restaurant without our local driver !!).

Our second experience - not being afraid any longer - was in the village of Telouet, after visiting the Kasbah. Our ‘guide’ recommended a restaurant along the main road called ‘Chez Mohamed Café Restaurant Palace de Telouet’; wonderful name for just a couple of plastic tables in the dust along the road. It took rather a long time, but again the food was excellent.

Just the ‘adventure’ of eating in a local restaurant with a lot of real Moroccan atmosphere.
It was so cheap, perhaps a couple of euro’s for the two/three of us.

    Local Cuisine: Rooftop pizza
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • One of the scenic Djemaa el Fna restaurants-with-balcony, Cafe de France was probably the least iviting in terms of decor of all the places I tried in the square. It looked pretty standard in terms of menu too - the usual tagines, teas and so on. But it has something the others don't: a wood-fired oven on the top level where you can watch pizza after pizza being slid in before being removed and carefully sprinkled with oil.

The pizzas are the thing to try. Small and perfectly formed, they are great value for around 3-4 dirhams, with thin, crispy bases and a variety of tasty toppings. It's great to anticipate your lunch while watching them being prepared, and the Moroccan pizzaiolo lends some atmosphere to the restaurant.

The view is not quite so good as the nearby Chez Chegrouni, but Cafe de France is a good solid choice for lunch.
