Local Cuisine: The BBQ King

  • Once we decided we were sufficiently hungry, we walked around the food vendors in Djemaa el-Fna. All the food vendors were calling to potential customers to come and look, we decided on one which looked safe/clean/fresh and was reasonably busy with local customers.
We sat down at the communal long table in front and looked at the menu. The menu was written on a signpost and the food was displayed in front of the grill. So it was easier to order by just looking and pointing.

We ordered grilled mixed seafood, grilled eggplant, tomato salad and grilled fish. You get a tomato salsa type dip and round soft white bread rolls to dip while you wait.
The food was divine - fresh, not greasy and hot.

    Local Cuisine: Tagine Dishes
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you like olives do not miss the chicken tagine. Made with a thick sauce the chicken and olives are cooked and served in a tagine. Had a delicious meal at one of the restaurants on a side "street" where the post office meets the JEF. Sorry can't remember the name though!

    Local Cuisine: Excellent cous cous
  • Tip Rating:

  • Here I can reccomend Hotel ali's restaurant, very cheap but really crowded, the street food in the Meidina is excellent or the restaurant with the terrace on Place Jemaa el Fna, but they are pretty expensive, let's say that you pay also the view on the square.

    Ali's cous cous was superb.

    Local Cuisine: Yacout
  • Tip Rating:
  • This restaurant is in an old palace in the middle of the old part of the city. Part of the experience is to be taken on a tour of the palace during your meal. One has a drink either in the entry hall or on the roof to begin the evening and each successive course is served in a different room - all of which are decorated amazingly. The food is uniformly fantastic.

    Doesn't matter - everything's fantastic.

Local Cuisine: The Restaurant HOTEL ALI ....
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Restaurant HOTEL ALI . Very good food, very cheap and........ YOU CAN HAVE SIESTA RIGHT THERE, in the seats surrounding the wall where you have just had lunch. Itīs great. Itīs full of people who likes climbing, or trekking and a point of meeting for non-travel agency tourists.
In Hotel Ali you can have a vegetarian menu if you please. Very good service and food quality.

The main menu is Tajine, not COUS COUS as I thought, and the first 500 times you eat it itīs absolutely tasteful and great, but after that you will have nightmares with Tajine (Not in Marrakesh but in most of the south in Morocco you just can find Tajine for lunch, and though itīs got a lot of variations, you can get tired of it). The reason why Cous cous is not the main plate is because it takes so much time. It happens the same in Spain with the 'Cocido' (mmmmm!), you eat it only on weekends or some special day in some restaurant.
However, Tajine is quite easy to cook and fast, as long as they do it in a special plate with a triangular top which is the same you use to eat. They mix in it potatoes, meat or vegetables, sometimes eggs, and make a tasty spicy souce. Then they eat it with bread and their own hands (I mean in the country, in the south, villages where there are very few inhabitants), but they have cutlery if you need it.

Grilled Lamb Chop is supreme. But a Big Big suggestion to make is: 'Eat it where you want but donīt ever ever eat grilled lamb chop if 1. you havenīt seen the piece before and have a good colour and 2. the chops are
quite made, almost crusty, in order to avoid further problems.
Spicy Lentils at the stalls of the Djemaa el Fna Square are also great!!.

  • Tip Rating:
  • although they are typical tourist restaurants I would recommend you the restaurants near the place Place Djemaa el Fna..they are maybe not the cheapest one, but beside the nice view over the place you can be sure to pay a correct price and you are not be cheated..
don't ever follow any recommendation from hotel-recepcionist or shop-keeper..they are very tricky to take off the money from tourists

  • Tip Rating:
  • There are a few lovely restaurants here in Marrakech. I have two favorite Moroccan restaurants - found in the heart of Djemaa el-Fna Square (the medina) which I would like to humbly recommend - El Bakarah and Restaurant Yacout.

Let's just say the beautiful Moroccan setting, the ambience, the food (they serve lovely mouth-watering beef tagine...) et al makes this place so memorable.

Tagine... Couscous... Harira Soup.... Mechoui.... Pastilla... Yummy!

Local Cuisine: Nice sitting on Djema El Fna
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • You have the option of sitting outside but remember it can be very windy in the veneing or inside where you have a great view on the big market. It's a bit too hot in there so we stayed outside...
Rather slow service but very good food for a very good price. I.e. Couscous Legumes or Tajine Legumes 18 Dirham. Steak with rice, french fries and salad was 25 Dirham

Local Cuisine: Breakast in Djema El Fna
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • For breafast in Morocco, you nearly always get
    * a glass of fresh orange juice
    * a café noir, acafé au lait, een thé noir, athé ā la menthe or hot chocolate milk
    * a basket of fresh bread with butter and jam
    * an omelette or chocolate bread or croissant

You pay between 16 and Dirham per person.

But you can also buy your own breakfast in a shop (most Moroccans do it this way) and just get some tea or coffee in the Cafe

Local Cuisine: Stand #15 in the Djemaa el-Fna...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Stand #15 in the Djemaa el-Fna Square (I don't know how often the numbers change, but 15 was great the night we were there)
There are many food stands to choose from in the Square. It might be safer to ask around before actually choosing one (some are not very sanitary, but the locals usually know the spots). You sit in the open air of the square and enjoy unbelievable traditional Moroccan food. Be careful, this is definitely a spot where you can over-eat.

Cous Cous, chicken, and just about anything else they have
