by mafi_moya Not really much to say about this one as it's yet another mosque that doesn't allow non-Muslims to enter. But it's still a pretty impressive sight and as it's near the Saadian tombs and the Palais el-Badi you might as well have a look. At prayer times the street outside is absolutely packed with worshippers - it's one of the city's most popular mosques. Leave a Comment

by mafi_moya The Museum of Moroccan Arts is housed in Dar si Said - a multi-storey family home that was one of the grandest in Marrakech. It's got an excellent selection of exhibits from all over the country covering a time frame of a thousand years - jewellery, carpets, pottery etc. The displays are in small rooms surrounding a lovely garden courtyard. Exhibits include a 1000 year old Spanish basin and an old staircase used in mosques for preaching. Leave a Comment Directions: Amid the maze of Medina streets southeast of Djemaa el-Fna. It's just off Rue Riad Zitoun el-Jedid.

A typical quiet street in Gueliz by MM212 Marrakech is split into two cities, la Médina and le Guéliz, the old and new. Guéliz was designed by the French during the colonial period and its street planning is reminiscent of France with its wide avenues converging into spacious roundabouts (Places). Walking down the streets, one could be in a southern European city. It is a marked contrast to the streets of the Medina and provides a bit of calm relief. Many good restaurants and bars are scattered around Guéliz making the area worth exploring, at least for a lunch or a dinner at night. Major tourist attractions in this area include Jardins Majorelle and the Menara Park.

An example of one of the decorative windows in this house / museum. A good example of Islamic art in the stucco surroundings. As you can see, the design is geometric with the the pattern being repeated in symetrical style. Below is a picture of the decorative doorway and courtyard. I'm not sure if the man in the doorway is the owner of the museum or not. Leave a Comment Address: Tiskiwin Museum, Marrakesh, MoroccoDirections: Please see above tip

If you have a little spare time, do try to go out of Marrakesh into the Atlas mountains. There are various options: Ourika valley is one, or - as we did - go to Ouarzazate, which leads you all the way across the Atlas mountains, passing the Tichka pass and down again to the street of Kasbahs. On our way to Ouarzazate we visited Ait ben Haddou - a Kasbah that has been named Unesco World Heritage site - and that is for a good reason! I had been fascinated by this place some twenty years ago and this fascination has not changed after all this time! Leave a Comment

me in oukaymdén by khalid_2 What strikes you first about the High Atlas Mountains is the extraordinary beauty of the landscapes that surround you, then comes the wonderful warmth and hospitality of the Berber people. The High Atlas Mountains are a favorite stomping ground for hikers and people who love wide-open spaces. You might think about going off on a long trip, for two or three weeks with a mule, a guide and a cook. Or you could just go for a few days in search of a Berber village. But be careful, you need to plan such a hike very carefully. Choose your itinerary according to your own degree of physical fitness and expertise. You may run into snow-covered summits and steep valleys. But you will find a whole network of trails already traced out for you. You should be on your best behavior when you enter a village: dress appropriately, be respectful of local customs, especially where food is concerned. Sometimes there isn't enough to go around, as most villages depend on agriculture as their principal resource for food. MUST-SEES: 1-Asni Valley With its two villages where visitors can rent mules to climb into the Atlas and discover the snowy majesty of the highest peak in Morocco: Toubkal Mountain (13,536 ft). 2-Ouirgane Resort situated near salt marshes with its Tin Mal Mausoleum dating to the ancient Kingdom of the Almohades. 3 -The Ourika Valley Where springtime is eternal, a tranquil paradise filled with flowers and sparkling streams. 4-Ouzoud Waterfalls Extraordinary cascades of water more than 300 feet high in the heart of the Atlas Mountains. 5-Oukaimden Ski Resort: Situated at an altitude of 8,450 feet, the ski slopes are only 70 km from Marrakech. This resort is equipped with the highest ski lift in Africa. Leave a Comment Directions: You should know a mountains' guide !

This was an outstanding evening which gave an introduction to the glamour and history of life in "old Morocco". It is an evening of dinining and entertainment, Berber horsemanship, traditional dancers, musicians, belly dancers, mystery, fireworks and elaborate buildings. We had a fabulous time, picked up at our hotel and taken to the outskirts of the city this certainly was a night to remember and good value. Our all inclusive cost was 55 Euro per person which we thought was good value, included alcoholic drinks with traditional dinner server to your table. We were back in our hotel by midnight. If you fancy a short active break out of Marrakech, a trip up the Ourika Valley to Setti Fatma with a mountain hike from the village up to the cascades above is very enjoyable and can easily be managed in a day trip. We travelled up by Grand Taxi and hired a guide - and got stung on both, I think. From later enquiries, I'd say you can get a taxi from Bab Rob (appropriate name!) outside Marrakech to Setti Fatma and the return trip 4 hours later for around 450 dirhams for up to 4 people (the locals pay 20 dirhams oneway and travel 6 to a taxi). A guide for 4 hours for around 200 dirhams. In both cases, you'll have to argue the price down to this. Leave a Comment Address: Take a petit taxi to Bab RobDirections: In the Atlas Mountains about 50 kms south of Marrakech

by stappm We took a day trip booked thru the Hotel Sofitel to Essouira. It is a seaside town on the Atlantic - it was a port for the Portugese at one time and several movies have been filmed there "Kingdom of Heaven" with Orlando Bloom being one of them. It is about a 2.5 hour drive from Marrakech and the guide we had was AWESOME - he had impeccible english which was quite a WELCOMED find in Morocco!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Sofitel! and was very entertaining. We stopped along the way at a couple sites and had a lovely lunch in Essouria. It is a much more slower paced place then Marrakech! Leave a Comment
