If you get lost in the souks trying to find that particular cafe or one of the many sights nestled within the narrow alleyways and a friendly face offers you directions they will expect to be paid for their kindness.

Unique Suggestions: Keep hold of your coins, they come in handy.

  • Djamaa el Fna food stalls

The food at the food stalls is not specially good and the portions are very small. Some of the restaurants arround the place (The Toukal for example) will give you something better for nearly the half of the price.

In my opinion all the square and the souk is a tourist trap.

Unique Suggestions: Visit the square and for the food check the restaurants around it.

The souk is OK for a look but avoid to buy since it is not a nice experience.

Don't waste your time wandering around the Medina

The Medina is a huge maze that only the locals know. Don't waste any of your precious vacation time wandering around lost.

Unique Suggestions: Hire a guide. My daughter and I hired a fantastic guide who took to places most tourists never see. We were never bothered by the beggars because he took care of them. It was an amazingly stress free day. I would recommend Rachid B. to anyone. He spoke wonderful English and gave us a great history lesson. Contact me for his information.

Fun Alternatives: Seriously, if you don't hire Rachid, hire someone to guide you around. It's too difficult to do on your own.

    Map of Morocco

    by Natalie77 Written Jun 22, 2004
    Lost but enjyoing

Be careful when driving a car around Morocco. The map had some roads, which were not existing anymore and when we turned to one of such roads, we were lost afterwards. All the people on the way were showing to different directions and always asking money for that.

Unique Suggestions: So, follow only road signs and not what your map might show.

    The most worthwhile tourist
    traps are collected inside
    a rather small zone,
    starting in the north with
    the suuqs, continuing through
the town square of Jemaa l-Fna
    with its crowd of storytellers,
    musicians and the Koutoubia
    mosque which is visible
    from practically anywhere
    in Marrakech
