By Taxi / By Petit Taxi / By Grand Taxi: Taxies
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can move around the city also with the Petit Taxies and with the Grand Taxies ... The firts ones are for sharing ... so they can pic 3 persons ... and are cheaper than Grand Taxies ... a medium fare of the pettit taxies are around 10 dirham ... if you go to the airport is around 60 dirham ( 100 dirham if you take it at night )
If you are at a bus stop is normal to take a petit taxy between 3.

By Taxi / By Petit Taxi / By Grand Taxi: A Grand taxi from the airport to the medina
  • Tip Rating:
  • We got a "grand taxi" from the Marrakesh airport to as close to our riad in the medina as the car could get for around 150 dirhams. Grand taxis are probably the better way to go to and from the airport depending upon how much souk shopping you intend to do, thanks to their larger size/bigger trunk space. You should tip the taxi driver.

You'll find several taxis waiting outside the airport upon your arrival. Or you can have your riad schedule one to be there waiting for you with a sign at your arrival time. Upon departure, have your riad/hotel call a grand taxi for you to meet you as our driver did.

We found that grand taxis in Marrakesh do not run on meters, instead, they ask where you want to go, then tell you a fare. Not sure if this can be negotiated, it probably can. We didn't bother as the price seemed fair enough.

Marrakech is just like any other city in the world. Guidebooks and travel websites are full of cautionary tales of travellers being "ripped off" by unscrupulous taxi drivers just minutes after setting foot outside the airport.

With this in mind, I did a bit of research and found out that I should expect to pay about 80 Dhs (5 GBP) for a taxi from the airport to my hotel (Hotel Islane) near the Djemaa El Fna in the centre of Marrakech. If the taxi driver quoted me a higher price, I'd simply ask him to turn his meter on. Faultproof!

And so it was that after getting off my flight, tired, in a strange city and carrying a couple of heavy bags, I wandered into the airport's car park and made my way over to the waiting queue of yellow taxis.

    "How much to Hotel Islane?"

    "130 Dirhams"

    "130???"

    "Yes"

"Can you turn your meter on?"

    "I don't have one!"

    "Oh. Ok."

And that was that! Maybe I should have paid just 80 Dirhams for the 5km journey to my hotel, but what choice did I have? Was I going to stand there arguing over 50 Dirhams (3 GBP)? Of course not, I just wanted to get to my hotel, dump my bags and start exploring the city!

Later in the week, I spoke to people who had paid 150 Dirhams for their taxi ride from the airport.

Don't let worries of being fleeced out of a few Dirhams ruin the start of your holiday in Marrakech. Keep things in perspective - a few extra dirhams on the taxi fare is a lot more significant to the taxi driver than it is to the majority of holidaymakers!

    By Bus: By bus.
  • Tip Rating:

  • If your traveling by a strickt budget , and you are tired
of hassling with taxidrivers over the use of the
    meter-
    TAKE THE BUS.

We took the bus a couple of times and didn't
see other tourist doing that often.
Often because of the warnings of pick pockets
etc. Just use your good sence.

A ticket will cost you 3 dirham.

Bus 11 brings you to the menara gardens.
It is also the bus for the airport , but it stops
    about 800m from the airport.....
If you come from the Menara gardens , just jump
on any bus passing by and they will bring you
    near the Jemaa-el-fna.

    Alternatives: Sahara Expedition
  • Tip Rating:
  • We found that organization at Hotel Ali. But their office is located on the corner of Avenue el-Mouahidine and Rue Bani Marine. They offer different kinds of trips (from 1 to 15 days). The organization is excellent and the people very honest.
Before going to Morocco, we had an idea of the places we wanted to explore and the things we wanted to do. But soon we realized that traveling by bus wouldn’t be easy because the bus system is not reliable enough, we would lose a lot of time depending on the timetables and delays and we wouldn’t be able to see everything we wanted to see. Ait Ben Haddou for example was on our list but not on the bus way.
We also thought of renting a car but personally, I wouldn't have liked to drive, I found it quite dangerous on the road (we saw many accidents) and it's easy to get lost, they were no road signs in some places.
Finally, we opted for the 4 days-3 nights package for the south of the country and didn't regret that choice. The tour was exactly what we were looking for. We even got a discount. We only needed to be six people before leaving to get it. Easy to find in a city full of tourists like Marrakesh.
The advantages of our package : we had a driver who knew exactly the way, we didn’t have to worry about busses, timetables, hotels etc., we traveled by 4x4, the number of participants was limited to 6 people.
Now, I'm really glad we traveled this way. We could take ways that would have been impossible by bus or even by car. And thanks to our driver, we didn't lose our time and could simply enjoy that fabulous part of the country.

Rent a car from "Beautiful Car"!
  • Tip Rating:
  • While in Marrakesh if you wish to rent a car for a day, a few days, what have you, you'll find Avis, Hertz and Budget in the "new city" (Gueliz). However, while we were there all three were fully out of cars so our new Moroccan friend suggested we rent from Beautiful Car Location de Voitures. Also located in the ville nouveau, Beautiful Cars will pick you up right smack in the middle of Djemma el Fna (if you're staying in the Medina), take you back to their office to fill out paperwork for a few short minutes, then you'll be on your merry way. We paid around 600 dirham for the day, with unlimited miles/kilometers and full insurance coverage. Once you return the car to their office, they'll drive you back to wherever you need to go within Marrakesh. Now that's service! ;-)

You can rent small cars, tourist vans/mini buses and 4x4s here.

Well I guess with the Government iniative to push tourism and the drive to increase the number of tourists up into the multi millions mark comes with the increase in commercialism (not just the freeing up of airspace and thus the end of the Government monopoly on airlines and prices) - so the Hop on Hop off bus around the sights of Marrakech had to happen eventually!

Not something Im in a hurry to do myself just yet but as with most cities its a way that I would usually recommend as part of getting orientated to a place and its sights especially after all the effort and energy involved in arriving at the destination. A good way to see the lay out of a city and hear useful facts and historical information while the looking at the relevant sight.

The brochures being handed out nor the boards along the road advertising the bus tours have no note of prices so I cant help with that but I have a brochure with a layout of the tour routes available.

You'll see a gazillion horse-drawn carriages lined up on the Club Med side of Djemma el Fna all day long. And through out the city transporting mostly tourists from what I saw. You can get around by Caleche for around 100 dirham an hour. They'll take you almost anywhere within Marrakesh, we even saw people being taken down the narrow Derb Debatchi on one of these things which I thought was INSANE considering this passageway is overflowing with people on foot.

On foot / Walking: On foot around Marrakesh.
  • Tip Rating:
  • On foot is the best way to get around Marrakesh's centre. Through the Souks, Medina, Mellah area, your walking tour will find many hidden corners and sights that you can't reach by taxi or car, or that you'd miss as you whizzed past!

So, comfy shoes on and just lose yourself in the labrynth of the many alleyways and roads of Marrakesh!

Don't forget to look up as well as straight in front- there are lots of 'hidden treasures'

Don't get worried that You'll not find your way out- theres always someone to direct you to 'the square' or the nearest landmark.

    By Bus: CTM or Supratour
  • Tip Rating:
  • CTM and Supratours are the most reliable bus companies in Morocco. We also tried SATAS but it's not to recommend.

The main bus station in Marrakesh is located outside the walls of the medina. You can walk (+/- 20 min.), take a local bus (3 Dh) or a little taxi (should be less than 10 Dh, check if the counter is on and ask the price before getting in).
    CTM : 044 43 44 02

Supratours is located near the train station (avenue Hassan II) : 044 43 55 25
