  • Taxi's are quit cheap in Morocco.
The city center is covered by little cars ,
often peugeot 205. Covered , that is the streets
where they can drive and the places they can
reach. You can ask them to put on the meter
and get out of the car if they don't want to
or you could ask them for the price from here till
there. We choose for the last option. They charge
you about 3 times the real price , but it still
is cheap and then the tip is included.
2 euro for a drive into the city from the
congress center....And they also take the
shortest way if you do it at a fixed price.

I found it very pleasant to take a taxi. The drivers
were fun to talk too. I felt comfortable. Sometimes
if you ask for the price they just say , give
whatever you want. And they mean that. ;-)

A few times we did some co-driving. Sharing
a taxi. And for your information , it were always
local woman who took us with them.
Yes , local woman , with or without veil.

By Horse-Cabs: Catch a Caleche and sit back and relax
  • Tip Rating:
  • Impressively since the animal welfare organisation Spana, set up by a British mother and daughter in the early 60s to educate the owners of donkeys, mules and horses in the training and care of their animals, the state of these animals seems to be greatly improving.
Spana's role include the inspection and license of carriage horses used in the caleches and distribute more humane harnessing equipment.

The horses hooves are branded so apparently if you notice any problems you can report these to the police or to the Centre Hospitalier pour Animaux (visitors are welcome here too apparently!) at 04303110

Anyway check out that you are happy with how your horse seems to be cared for, check the prices for whether you have a destination in mind such as out to Marjorelle Gardens, the Palmeraie or for a sunset tour around the city walls which therefore might be best to negotiate how much per hour (and rates should be on a chart inside the caleche) which is about 80-100 dirham per hour (a bargain!!) to relax and take in the atmosphere from such a birds eye vantage point!

By Train: From Rabat to Marrakesh by the night train
  • Tip Rating:
  • The train comes from Tanger and departures from Rabat Ville at 3.40 a.m. The station is modern and clean. If you want to wait for a train over the night as I did you can have one small problem because the station is closed between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. I stayed in front of the station and it was relatively safe for us (three travelbuddies). Feeling safe we fell asleep but we were waken up by policmen (the Moroccan policemen seemed to be very polite) at about 2.30 a.m. They shaked our hands and told us not to fall asleep. I think there is one opportunity to sleep at the station waiting for the Marrakesh train. Go down to the platforms. Maybe there you can stay over the night. There are only two toilet keepers working over the night.
The train was deleyed about 10 minutes. It was crowdy but there were some free seats. Some people were sleeping on 4 places and didn't want to make them free. Maybe it is a common thing in the night trains. One of us came in and took the place and treathened them with police and ticket collector. We finally had three seats.
The ticket costs about 120 MAD (about 12 Euros) for 5 hours journey.

If you need a reliable taxi & guide for Marrakesh or trips around, give Khalid a call (061 73 23 50, cell phone), and he'll show you the city. He's got even a Guestbook in the taxi, where you can see the comments of recent guests.

  • Each town in Morocco has its own taxi cab colour. The Marrakesh taxi cabs are sand yellow. The Marrakesh taxi drivers usually don't switch on the taximeter. If they don't want to do it haggle the price with them. Take it easy if they mock or shout. There are thousends of them and everyone wants to earn the money. There a lot of honest taxi drivers in Morocco. By the way I loved to haggle the price with them. Haggling prices is here a common thing and one of the attractions of the Arab World. ;-) I really enjoyed it.

From Djemma El Fna to the bus station don't pay more than 10 MAD for the jouney (never pay for person - petit taxis are not collectiv taxis).
From Djemma El Fna to the Jardin Menera about 10 MAD (1 Euro) - 9 MAD were indicated on the taximeter.

By Taxi / By Petit Taxi / By Grand Taxi: Petit Taxis/Caleches
  • Tip Rating:
  • For trips around town, the petit taxis are inexpensive, 5-10 dirhams (50¢ to $1). If the meter isn't working, negotiate a price. Don't let the drivers rip you off, they'll ask for 20 or 30! Try to get one with a working meter.

Calèches (horse drawn carriages) are a fun way to explore the old city. Price for this ride is negotiable too. SO make sure you haggle for a lower price.

    The ferry ticket
  • Tip Rating:
  • An hourly ship runs between the Algeciras in Spain and the Tangier in Morocco. You can easily buy the ticket in the counter sales office just at the Algeciras train station. It nearly take 10 mins walk from the train station to the pier.

On the ship, you have to fill in a form just like a landing card and then with your passport standing one of the windows which will show you to pass the custom control. When you get off the ship, you have to show the stamp chop on your passport.

If you are lucky, you can enjoy the dolphins show at the sea. May be hundred. They jump up and down. So, you can try to have a seat on the upper deck.

  • The Petit Taxis Du Marrakech - Marrakesh
    The Petit Taxis Du Marrakech

Marrakech has two different types of taxis, the big old fashioned Mercedes type ( Grand Taxis) and little khaki coloured Fiats ( Petit taxis). In theory the petit taxis cost less as they are only allowed to carry three passengers ( the grand taxis squeeze in up to 6). Petit taxis all have meters, but the drivers are reluctant to put them on, so if they refuse to put the meters on agree a price before moving. The price you agree will probably be about 3 times the cost that the meter would show, but even with this mark up a trip from Jemma El Fna to Guliez still only costs about £1.20. Tipping is not really expected as they are happy with the fact that you have just paid triple the price.

Most drivers speak a little French and possibly a tiny smattering of English, in fact some of them are teachers supplementing their income. Don't be alarmed if another person joins you in a taxi, just sit back and accept it as one of Marrakech's strange customs.

A private bus: looks good, but
    no AC

There are three types of inter-city buses to and from Marrakech. Firstly, at the bus station, opposite Bab Doukkala, there are the private bus companies, which operate to all major cities, including many every day to Tangier, Agadir, Essaouira, Goulimine and Casablanca. The buses look fine, but they don't use airconditioning and they stop frequently to pick up passengers and sometimes just to do a bit of shopping in local markets. Only use these buses, if there is no alternative. The passengers who use them are more than 95% locals.

Then there are the Supra Tours buses, which are run by the state rail company. They are fast, direct and use their airconditioning. More than 90% of their passengers are foreign tourists, but usually these buses are full. So, it is essential that you go to the Supra Tours office, next to the train station, and book your ticket the day before you plan to travel. They run to Agadir, Essaouira, Smara and Goulimine

Thirdly, there is the state-run CTM company, which operates from an office in the centre of Gueliz. The passengers on these are about a 70/30 split between locals and foreigners. They are fast, direct and use their airconditoning and, in my opinion, they are even better than Supra Tours. They run buses to many destinations, including Agadir, Casablanca, Fes, Rabat, Taroudannt, Ouarzazate, Zagora and Goulimine.

To give you some idea of times and prices, a CTM bus to Ouarzazate cost DH70 and took more than 4 hours; a Supra Tours bus to Essaouira cost DH65 and took just under 4 hours. On all of these buses, you will have to pay at least DH5 extra for each piece of heavy baggage.

Take a ride in a Horse-drawn carriage, take a covered one if the weather is too hot. 80 Dh for 1 hour, 50 Dh for 1/2 hour, 30 Dh for a quick ride. You can tell the driver where to go, or just let him wander around. Fix the price before starting!!
