 | Marrakesh Transportation | Tips 41 - 50 of 112 | | Prebooking may be a problem unless you have the number for a taxi driver and can speak fluent French or Arabic. When you arrive at Marrakech airport you can negotiate with a taxi driver but expect to pay around 800 - 1000Dh, about €70 - €90 or £55 - £70, to go to Agadir; that's for the taxi and luggage, not per person. The taxi will be a battered old Mercedes with no air con so the only option is to have the window open and let all the dust in. There is a Supratours coach service from Marrakech to Agadir, the journey is about 5 hours with a stop part way through the mountains for snack and toilet use. The cost of this option is about 80Dh per person and the service operates four times a day I think, times of departure are sometimes variable (trying to find the times for you). If you go for this option you will have to make your way to the rail station at a cost of about 80Dh by taxi, if they ask for more go to another driver or haggle. The bus station is just next to the train station and you need the Supratours bus which goes to Agadir. When you arrive in Agadir you must then make your way from the Gare (bus station) to the tourist sector at a cost of about 30Dh, the meter should be turned on, if not give no more. Unfortunately the train does not yet go to Agadir from Marrakech but one day............ Theme: Bus |

As you leave Marrakech train station you should jump into a yellow Petit Taxi (it doesn't look like the picture I'm afraid) They are loads in the station taxi rank. Instead of putting your luggage in the boot, you have to place it in a small rack on top of the taxi! Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home |
When we visited Marrakesh in September 06 we found ourselves a fantastic taxi driver who was reliable, efficient and very honest. While everyone else was charging us 150 to 200 dirham’s to go to the Airport Muhammad (bless him) charged us only 80 dirham’s to go to the airport from Medina. Muhammad also gave us the tour of Marrakesh at a very cheap price; he would drop us off and then pick us up a few hours later. This was perfect for us as we had a 2 year old child and didn’t want the hassle flagging down a taxi and then pay four times the price it should be. Muhammad also showed us the souks in his petit taxi which had its advantages as we didn’t have to walk and he would take us to shop which he new the goods were genuine and of good quality. As you will find in Marrakesh there are a lot of imitations and you need to be careful in what you buy. By the end of our holiday we became such good friend with Muhammad that he has invited us to stay with his family when we go back next year. If you need taxi and peace of mind please call Abdul Rahman who speaks English on 07629 7052, he will get in touch with Muhammad for you who will pick you up from your hotel. From my journal: ‘We set off around the outskirts of the city along wide avenues to the Kasbah Bab (gate), through narrow lanes in the medina, with people selling shoes, clothes, coffee and spices. Quite an experience. We stop at the Djema el Fna, which is quite amazing, with people trading, eating, entertaining or just watching. A really brilliant night out.’ Leave a Comment Theme: Other |
On our first visit to Marrakech we travelled by train from Rabat. The journey takes 4 hours and it was one of the nicest journeys of our trip. The colour of the landscape is beautiful especially south of Casablanca, when it changes from being mostly green to red and orange. You can feel you are entering the south! We also spent a lot of time talking to a couple from Dubai/Sweden who were on the way to visit relatives in Marrakech. They knew the area well and gave us many tips on what to see and do. The trip was very good value. We travelled first class and it cost about 100 Dh each for a single ticket. The station in Marrakech is in the Ville Nouvelle. We planned to stay at Hotel du Pacha which was a 10 minute walk from the station. If you do get a taxi from the station watch out for the cost. It shouldn't cost more than 10 Dh for most trips in the city and Marrakech's taxi drivers are notorious for overcharging foreigners. Leave a Comment |

Although I'd visited Marrakech the previous year, and knew my way around, I decided to buy a ticket (130dh) This ticket is valid for 24 hours from time of purchase, from attendants standing nearby at popular spots, or from the driver. (Time your purchase if there is a crowd, and no bus in sight, or you could lose 30 minutes or so) Your ticket price includes headphones for the taped commentary (8 languages) and 10% off tours in the other cities through Europe and USA (only Marrakech in Africa in 2006) - I Used this in Granada later in the year, with 10% off. I've since used this service again in Granada, Padua and Valencia There are 2 routes- The City Monuments (from 0900 - 19.30 approx every 20 - 30 mins), and the Marrakesh Romantique (No recorded info)(0930, 10.30.12.00 and 13.30) I'd advise doing the Romantique first, as the times are a bit limited. This covers Jardins Majorelle and The Palmeraies. The Marrakech Monumental passes by most of the main attractions. I did this as the tour first, then used it as a hop on hop off for the rest of the day, and the next morning. Remember your sun screen/hat if sitting on the upper level! I think there is wheelchair access, the one in Granada lowered its steps for this purpose. Taxis in Marrrakech are either little ones or big ones. The Petit little ones are small and by law can only hold 3 people maximum. They are for local jobs and should display a meter but often this is deliberately left off. So the usual haggle ensues if you don't agree a price beforehand. The standard fare for short journies is under Dirhams 10 (say about 90 Euros cents) however when going out to the new city, the fare can be 20 or more. After 8pm the fare is also loaded. So best try to agree on a fare and get an idea of the cost and what you consider sensible or just plain stupid. The large mercedes cars or Grand taxis are able to seat 6 people and are used for longer distances mainly. So if you are a group of 4 then look for one of these. To use a petit taxi in Marrakech, try this phrase: "Le metre, c'est marche?" (the meter, it is running?) We found it quite hard to find petit taxis around the old medina and the ville nouvelle but I believe they are around in their muddy gold livery... Petit taxi's are the ones to use if you want to stay inside the city. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home |
Course, what they don't tell you about Marrakech is the roads. I intended to hire a 4 wheel drive thingy and drive about the country to see the sights. Now having been told it's cheaper to hire when I got there, I didn't pre-book. Smart move number one. We went through customs straight into the waiting taxi to be whisked off to our hotel........ whisk being a very apt word. We drove out of the airport and entered a world that could only have been created by an infernal marriage of the talents of Salvador Dali and Hieronymus Bosch. Things on wheels ..... EVERYWHERE!!!! For sur real!!! Let me tell you about the rules of the road in Marrakech. They drive on the right ... unless its full .... in which case they drive in the middle ..... unless it's full ....... in which case they drive on the left ..... unless it's full ....and it's always full ...... in which case they just drive as if you're at a fair ground, safely ensconced in a dodgem car. But of course you aren't. This is the sate of affairs permanently, apart from the hours of 2.30 to 2.35 am, during which brief window of opportunity the sane venture forth ,,,,,,, nervously. You think I jest. Ah, misguided friend of mine, I have never been more serious. Chaos, absolute chaos, or so I thought for the first 3 days and then I realised it was not chaos, merely anarchy. Imagine a road, albeit a wide road (this IS the main route around Marrakech after all) of just 2 lanes .. one going, one coming, allegedly. Each lane is occupied with nose to tail vehicles, 3, sometimes 4, abreast, some of whom are wanting to turn right regardless of lane and some of whom are wanting to turn left ... and some of whom are just wanting to turn. Thread this with cyclists on bikes and mopeds who are travelling at right angles to the flow. Thousands of them. Everyone travels at 30 miles an hour. Never faster, never, ever slower. I never did hire a car. Leave a Comment Theme: Other |

Taxis are all over the place! There are petit taxis (little taxis) and grand taxis (big taxis). The petit taxis are allowed to take up to 3 passengers. We were told by our guide that a tour within the city or from adjacent neighborhoods to the city should not cost more than 20 DH (2 ?), so what we did was to tell the driver where we wanted to go for 20 DH and usually they accepted. The traffic in Marrakesh is wild, so at times we got out of the taxi with shivering knees, but after all, everything went extremely well! Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home |
