 | Marrakesh Transportation | Tips 51 - 60 of 112 | | Course, what they don't tell you about Marrakech is the roads. I intended to hire a 4 wheel drive thingy and drive about the country to see the sights. Now having been told it's cheaper to hire when I got there, I didn't pre-book. Smart move number one. We went through customs straight into the waiting taxi to be whisked off to our hotel........ whisk being a very apt word. We drove out of the airport and entered a world that could only have been created by an infernal marriage of the talents of Salvador Dali and Hieronymus Bosch. Things on wheels ..... EVERYWHERE!!!! For sur real!!! Let me tell you about the rules of the road in Marrakech. They drive on the right ... unless its full .... in which case they drive in the middle ..... unless it's full ....... in which case they drive on the left ..... unless it's full ....and it's always full ...... in which case they just drive as if you're at a fair ground, safely ensconced in a dodgem car. But of course you aren't. This is the sate of affairs permanently, apart from the hours of 2.30 to 2.35 am, during which brief window of opportunity the sane venture forth ,,,,,,, nervously. You think I jest. Ah, misguided friend of mine, I have never been more serious. Chaos, absolute chaos, or so I thought for the first 3 days and then I realised it was not chaos, merely anarchy. Imagine a road, albeit a wide road (this IS the main route around Marrakech after all) of just 2 lanes .. one going, one coming, allegedly. Each lane is occupied with nose to tail vehicles, 3, sometimes 4, abreast, some of whom are wanting to turn right regardless of lane and some of whom are wanting to turn left ... and some of whom are just wanting to turn. Thread this with cyclists on bikes and mopeds who are travelling at right angles to the flow. Thousands of them. Everyone travels at 30 miles an hour. Never faster, never, ever slower. I never did hire a car. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Taxis are all over the place! There are petit taxis (little taxis) and grand taxis (big taxis). The petit taxis are allowed to take up to 3 passengers. We were told by our guide that a tour within the city or from adjacent neighborhoods to the city should not cost more than 20 DH (2 ?), so what we did was to tell the driver where we wanted to go for 20 DH and usually they accepted. The traffic in Marrakesh is wild, so at times we got out of the taxi with shivering knees, but after all, everything went extremely well! Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

YES - you can rent a car in Morocco! From Avis even, they are everywhere! Driving from city to city - say Marrakech to Essouria or to Ourika is no problemo. It is difficult driving within the citys - traffic crazy and the streets get smaller and smaller and few are labeled. Be careful as the highways are not like western highways and are usually very small 2 lane roads. Yes, they are paved, but Just narrow. And accidents are frequent! We saw 2 fatalities on the way to Essouria alone. We paid about 45 Euro a day including all the insurance they would sell me. No international drivers license needed - and Avis has all that info (we rented from the net) Leave a Comment

Agree a price before hoping into a taxi - approximately 100 dirhams from airport to New Town as a rough guide. As in London it is fine to hail a taxi. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Most of the time we walked through Marrakesh. Distances in the city are not that far and in order to really enjoy the sounds and smells and sights of the city, there is no other way but walk! Especially in the suuqs you just have to walk, but be careful: there are a lot of people on bicycles and motorcycles who don't seem to ever use their brakes..... So you better watch out and jump! Marrakech airport is about 6km outside the city and the best way to get there is by taxi. Be warned, Moroccan taxi drivers are notorious for overcharging tourists. You should not pay more than about 50 Dh for the trip. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

A slow paced, in the face of Marrakech, way to see the area Once again you have to bargain. We took our tour on Friday Everything was closed down! Interesting way to take a tour., at least the roads were clear ! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

We saw quite a few locals on bicycles, but with the traffic going on in Marrakesh it did not seem like a good idea for us. Interesting enough, there was a "rent-a-bicycle" area right across the street from our hotel, so it seems as if this is not unusual at all. It was just our personal decision not to rent a bike! When we booked our trip to Marrakesh, a tour through the city in a horse carriage was included. Otherwise I would not have booked it, but I must say it was nice! We went on a night tour through Marrakesh and the sound of the horses' hoofs on the cobble stone was special! I felt a little sorry for the horses having to be in all that traffic, but they seemed to be used to it! Leave a Comment Theme: Other
