By Taxi / By Petit Taxi / By Grand Taxi, Marrakesh
The taxi driver will not use the meter so I'd forget all the tips that say get them to turn the meter on. I have never yet managed to get them to do this.
Know how much to expect to pay before you get to the taxi and then fix a price before you get in the taxi.
Don't expect to get the super low prices that locals pay but do not pay a rip off price.
As a tourist unless you can not afford to travel then you are rich compared to the drivers.
Pay a fare price.
From the airport to the Medina 70dh is a fair price. If it is late at night then maybe up to 100dh.
Never more than this,
On3 of the first real Marrakesh experiences that most people have is getting from the airport to the Medina.
You need to decide how much of this experience you want when you first get off the plane and want to get to your hotel
Three prices to think about. (I will explain in the test)
There are a few things to think about when deciding how to do this.
The two main things to consider are the time of your arrival and if a taxi can take you directly to the door of you hotel/riad. If it's during the evening or night the Medina can be a difficult place to navigate and it's an easy place to get lost. There are plenty of people looking to act of guides eager to take money from you.
If this is the case then the 150dh that the hotel will ask for a personnel pick up from the airport is well worth it. Although it is only a short drive then lets face it £12 is not a bad price to pay for the convenience. |Especially if you haven't been before and don't know where you are going.
If you decide to organise your own taxi and you can haggle a fair daytime rate is in my opinion 70dh.
You can haggle harder, take longer and get it down more but do you really need to?
If you don't want to haggle or it is later in the evening then a fare of 100dh will get you the ride quickly with no complaints.
If there's anything that annoys tourists in Marrakech, it's the taxi driver. If you read about the city you'll be sure they are the scourge of the city. They have meters, but they never use them. They'll happily charge tourists ten times the going rate, and more. They can be rude, crazy and downright dangerous in traffic. But they are cheap, and you can safely flag one down in the street without fear of getting robbed or kidnapped, which is more than can be said for many other developing countries.
There are two kinds of taxis in Morocco, and knowing the difference will help prevent you from getting mad at overcharging: the petit taxis and grand taxis. The petit taxis are personal transport, for you and up to three other passengers (that's a squash) and a reasonable amount of luggage. These tend to be small hatchbacks. The grand taxis are meant to be shared and are priced accordingly. If you want one to yourself you'll have to pay for every seat. These grand taxis are usually big Mercedes.
A typical short journey in Marrakech should be no more than about 10 dirhams... for a local. For tourists you'll be doing really well if you can bargain down to 20. Typically it depends on how long they've been waiting, how rich they think you are, and how desperate you are (because there are so few taxis available). I got a price of 25 dirhams from a taxi who had just dropped off a passenger, and paid 50 dirhams at rush hour when I had 30 minutes to meet someone and had been waiting for half an hour already for a taxi to stop. They all, every single one of them, asked for 100 dirhams to start with.
To help you stay calm when you are haggling, remember that even at 50 dirhams (4.5 euros) you are still paying a lot less than you would in most Western cities for the same journey.
My wife and our kids really enjoyed our desert trek which we booked through Taxi In Marrakesh. It was a big step for us to book through a non european agency, but we took the leap and didnt regret it for a second. firstname.lastname@example.org
As you may perhaps already know, many taxi drivers in Marrakesh have a very low level of ethics, they will try to charge the maximum they can extort from you.
Many tourist are charged 150DH or 50 DH per person from the airport to the city center, in reality this course doesn't cost more than 20 DH (2 euros) whether you are alone or with up to 3 people!
To pay this low fare you just have to walk 5 minutes to reach the main boulevard just outside the airport as shown in the picture.
Outside the airport area, taxis must use the counter and cannot charge high fixed fares, so insist on the driver to use it !
for you way back to the airport tell him to use the counter and that you want to go to Mhamid (the neighborhood close to the airport), once you are close to the airport ask him to drop you close to its entrance without entering the parking from there you will have to walk 5 minutes but you will pay just 20 dh instead of 50dh or more!
I found taximarrakech through reading some reviews about the company online. I've emailed the compay to ask for prices and they got back to me straight away. We nagotiated a return price from the airport to city centre. The price was for the car, not per person, therefore much cheaper than most of other companies or e.g. booking it through our hotel.
As soon as we got out the airport, the driver was waiting for us and he was also in time for our return. Everything was very easy and straight forward, worthwhile the money. Thank you.
Taxi prices are for the whole car, not per person. Expect to negociate the price with the driver, from the airport 80 to 100 dirhams is the norm. Away from the airport taxi's are much cheaper. It can be cheaper to hail a cab in the street than outside your hotel. Petite taxi's are found everywhere, insist the driver uses the meter if not agree a price before setting off.
visiting marrakesh was a dream come true,we spent a stunning week with friends, and thanks to "taxiamarrakech" we could get everywhere in and around marrakesh.
I think the best thing about this company is the friendliness of the staff! Thanks to the team at Taxi in Marrakech for the very enjoyable journey to Essaouira, and the great food you provided us with...
one word...BRILLIANT !
My family and I just returned from a mini-holiday in Marrakech. Hachim met us at the airport. It was perfect! We didn't have to negotiate with any of the taxi drivers like we heard many others doing. Hachim was on time and waiting with a sign. He was patient while we got money from the ATM and then took us straight to our hotel while pointing out some sights along the way. The next day Radwan picked us up at the scheduled time and drove us around Marrakech for a 1/2 day tour. He dropped us at the entrance to the sights and waited while we went inside. We could take as much or as little time as we wanted. Hachim took us back to the airport on the last day; again he was right on time and got us to the airport without any problems. Prices were very reasonable. Contact email@example.com
Merci to Adil, the Taxi in Marrakesh agent whom we consulted with to book our excursion to Essaouira. The tour itself was great. The guide showed us some incredible sites and views, and gave us good tips about where to eat and what to see, as we would be doing our own thing later in the evening. Really really good service.( contact: firstname.lastname@example.org )
I would just like to say a big warm thank you to the team from Taxi In Marrakesh for organisimg a brilliant tour for my mother and I for her birthday. She enjoyed every moment of our tour to the ourika waterfalls.
I recently went on holidays with my family to Marrakesh, and as I was searching for information about transportation, I found a company called Taxi In Marrakesh. We booked a tour to the desert through them, and they were really supportive and spoke English well. The tour itself was perfect! and the price was reasonable too.
Following good reports on RADWAN (contact @excursions-marrakech.com) phone 0021 12661438007 we phoned him to arrange pick up for 6 from the airport. We were not disappointed and his 7 seater car was perfect and we booked him and his cousin Alli for a trip for 8 of us to the Atlas mountains during our stay and again for return to the airport. Both men were gentlemen and informative and deserve to do well and be supported. Both speak several languages well which we found most helpful.
Once again thanks to Radwan (email@example.com) for being so efficient with airport transfers and also for a wonderful day in the Atlas mountains. Radwan is smart, friendly and lots of fun, and his 7 seater vehicle well maintained. He is also a brilliant driver in the very difficult and busy city conditions. We would certainly recommend contacting him for any trips you need to do by taxi, whether it be a sightseeing trip, airport transfers or simply to take you to a restaurant for dinner and return you back to your accommodation again.
Thanks to Chilledascanbe we used www.excursiones-marrakesh.com last week and had a great time. Radwan was waiting at the airport to take us to the hotel and gave us good advice about using other forms of transport around the town.
We arranged a full day out with him into the Atlas Mountains and a half day sight-seeing around the city. He couldn't have been more helpful. He stopped whenever we wanted a photo, drink walk and even arranged at short notice, lunch in a genuine Berber home. (Pay extra for this).
The half day tour (this time with his cousin Ali) took us to six sites in the city and he was always in sight as we came out ready to move on.
Finally he was there for our transfer back to the airport. He took us to our boarding desk before leaving, where he wished us well.
Both of the men were great company and had much knowledge of Marrakesh and its surroundings. I would reccommend their services anytime.
