They will beckon you to look closer, and then they turn it over and 1-2 Cobras jump up from underneath. They seemed to find my reaction of jumping about 10 feet back as hilarious. I guess someone forgot to tell them that Cobra venom can be deadly. These are not cute domesticated house pets. They are defensive and happy to strike. Also watch your step around the square. These “Snake Charmers” set up on any open patch of ground. Charming? I don’t think so! Leave a Comment

Before I went to Morocco, I had read about the snake charmers on Djemma el-Fna and I remember thinking how cool it would be to get my picture taken with one of the snakes. When I got there I wasn't so daring. Even though the snakes aren't dangerous, just the thought of going near them gave me the shivers. I took a photo of one of the snakes from a distance and before I knew what had happened one of the snake charmers approached, demanding money. He had his hand behind his back and I had a feeling there was something slithery in it so I threw a two Dirham piece on to the ground and made my exit. Leave a Comment

Most Morrocans travel with scooters.... it causes pollution (and thus bad odor) and noise...Not very funny... Leave a Comment

If you're jet-lagged and traveling in from the airport after an all-night flight.... please remember that even during off-hours (when crowds have thinned out considerably), NEVER take your eyes off your baggage!! Experienced thieves WILL wait for these kinds of moments and if you're not alert enough, they'd just grab your luggage and dash out of the door... your suitcase in hand, in seconds! Travel Safety: Use your good common sense. If an airline is notorious for poor on time performance, lots of passenger complaints and severe financial problems, then perhaps it is time to find an alternative airline. The same rule also applies if you're arriving via ferry/ ship. The port at Tangier can be absolutely chaotic! So be extra alert.

A taxi-driver offered us (myself & my boyfriend)a tour around Marrakesh for a certain price (can´t remember how much it was anymore), and I asked couple of times if the price was for both of us etc. etc. trying to make sure he wasn´t trying to con us. So we agreed on doing the "tour", because the price was ok and it sounded like a good idea seeing the town from a local point of view. He took us to some amazing places, so the tour itself was a real succee, but in the end he wanted more than the double price and things got very awkward, I told him we had a deal for this and this amount and he insisted that the agreed price was only for one person.. I refused to pay him that much and finally ended up giving him a bit more we had originally agreed on, but much less than what he asked for. He didn´t take us back to the hotel and we had to walk a bit to get there, but that was ok. The tour was great and he was a good guide, but the nasty end of the trip felt really bad... Be very aware of your surroundings - it is very easy to pick up some dodgy looking hanger ons. As well as pic-pockets in the Medina. We were standing around a coca-cola demonstration when some dodgy looking character was checking me out a little too closely - kind of freaky ! Leave a Comment

Near all touristic spots you might be harassed by people helping you find what you´re looking for. Sometimes they just want to help you, but some of them will later ask you for money. Leave a Comment

Taking pictures of a woman, especially her face is a sin in a muslim religion, be recpective of it. To avoid any problems rather ask the ladies permission before taking their pics especially when they are accompanied by men. This way you will avoid uneccesary problems for yourself. These two presented themselves and said we could take a pic of the woman, who it turned out to be a male dressed up like a female. Leave a Comment

This is something common to many Thrid World Countires and to the rest of the cities in Morocco, but also something I could hardly cope with in Marrakesh. Since the very first moment we stepped into the walled medina without the company of an official guide, we were constantly harassed by people trying to sell or show us something, or simply begging. Even with the guide many children approached us asking for sweets or pens. I have read that the police is severely controlling these activities and the situation should have improved in the last years. Leave a Comment

I've already mentioned it in my Morocco-page: The water is NOT SAFE TO DRINK in Morocco. You can suffer from stomache for the rest of your holiday after drinking this water. Buy water in a bottle. It is very cheap and safe! Be sure that the bottle is still unopened when you buy it in a store or on the market. Leave a Comment
