Sultan Moulay Ismail

Moulay Ismail reigned Morocco for some 55 years between the years 1672 and 1727. He was believed to have had killed more than 30,000 people. "My subjects are like rats in a basket, and if I don't shake the basket, they will gnaw their way out."

Early Settlers

Meknes is known as the “Versailles of Morocco”. There is a population of around 451,000. The first people arrived in this area during the 10th century and were of a Berber tribe named the Miknasa who travelled from southern Tunisia and Tripolitania.

Orange Groves

Travelling through the countryside you will pass by orange groves. Like olives, date palms and cork trees, harvesting oranges is one of the agricultural products of the country. Meknes orange production is likely to become the most important in the country because of the climate.

Climate

Meknes enjoys Mediterranean climate and it can get quite hot during the summer months. If you are trying to miss the rainy season then late spring through to early summer is a good time. The winters are fairly mild with an average of about 20C, but can also be wet.

Jalaba

The Jalaba or Jellaba is a traditional dress of Morocco. It is more like an robe or overcoat with a hood. Both men and women wear the Jalaba but can be different colours and materials. The Jabador is a two piece outfit.
