Breakfast wasn't included at Hotel Palace so we wandered around the Ville Nouvelle looking for a suitable café. We picked a small tea-room on Avenue Hassan II. Somehow they managed to get our order completely wrong. Ruth got normal tea instead of mint tea while they brought us two pain aux raisins rather than croissants. As it had taken a while for the food we decided to say nothing and stick with it. I don’t think this café had a name but it’s easy to find: it’s on the section of Avenue Hassan II between the Central Market and the Place Ifriquia. Having had a great lunch for 60 Dh between us at a cheap, local café in Moulay Idriss, we opted for something similar in Meknes. Restaurant Marhaba has been given a good write up in our guidebook and it was very busy when we got there, always a good sign. The prices were very low and the food was fine. For starter we had Harira (Moroccan soup) and a plate of Berber bread - all for 4 Dh. That’s about 25 pence sterling! Many of the locals had this as their entire meal and I’m not surprised as it was very filling. We shared a plate of beef brochettes for main course with a side order of chips. The brochettes were excellent though the chips were a bit cold - probably the only disappointing part of the meal. With drinks included the bill came to 48 Dh, beating our excellent value lunch.
