by Jimmie

Our stay in Tofo was one of the most memorable and relaxing times of our trip. We stayed at a place called Turtle Cove, which in hindsight, I would not recommend to the average backpacker. It was a lovely place designed more for the two week holiday maker with a little spare cash to spend. The setting was magnificent. Paw paw trees, cashew trees and coconut palms as far as the eye can see. The beaches were relatively deserted and nothing like their European counterparts with a 'pay as you tan' system!!!The huts were rustic and of traditional design and construction and there was open ground for campers. That was us! Mosquitos are always a worry the more tropical you get but malaria is avoidable with the right precautions. The main draw back for a backpacker at Turtle Cove is the meal situation. Although they do provide a wonderful menu: ranging from a traditional fry up to native fruit and...

I would take my friends to the afternoon tea in Hotel Cardoso, with a wonderfull view of the bay. Of course i would also guide them trough the town centre, to meet the most various sites, especially the Santo Antonio da Polana's church, star shapped, wich is really beautifull. I think i miss the calm way of life, not only from Mozambique but from all Africa. You have time for everything, to enjoy the good things they have to offer: the people, the views, the food, THE FRUIT!!, the wild life!... You just have to be there!
