Dont pretend you're anywhere else - Maputo is its own unique place - forget everything you think you know, especially about people, and start all over again.
If you want to be a package tourist, go to SA or Kenya!
This picture of my back garden is a perfect example - beautiful, with banana trees, coconut trees, mango trees, but with scorpions, venomous banana spiders, and poisonous wasps!
When it rains, STAY DRY - the rain carries every kind of infectious bug, and trust me - you WILL catch something, even if only a cold for a few days! Also, the rain hurts, it's that heavy. You can feel the air change & see the storm coming for at least 1/2 hour, so you have plenty of time to find cover! Corrupt officials? Yes! Unreliable public transportation? Yes! You name it...just stay independent, alert, and inconspicuous.
The streets and pavements in the centre of Maputo are dilapidated, and big holes are usual. Be careful where you put your feet.
Unfortunately Maputo still shows huge amounts of rubbish - tons of garbage - in some of its streets !!
Hopefully this will change soon.
It's incredible the way Mozambicans use to move around by car.
Unsafe ways for transportation is being seen all over !!!
