In front of hotels: Craft Vendors

Craft Vendors;Maputo has a wide selection of reasonable priced crafts. In the upper part of town, try the Craft Vendors who spread their woodcarvings and other wares daily in front of the beach hotels. Hard bargaining is required

THE BIGGEST MARKET IN MOZ: MERCADO MUNICIPAL (Municipal Market) - MAPUTO

by DAO

Looking for Souvenirs and “crafts”? You will find it at the back of the Municipal Market in Maputo. For some reason they try to hide this fairly large section of souvenirs and art objects. Paintings, wooden handicrafts and all sorts of items from real handmade artefacts to absolute kitsch. The odd bit of North American Indian Dreamcatchers are side by side with plastic keychains and wooden Rondavels (traditional round thatch houses). Because of its location the section practically buzzes when real tourists enter. They are happy to quietly negotiate a price with you. The atmosphere is very polite and you should negotiate accordingly.PLEASE NOTE: THIEVES OPERATE AT THE ENTRANCE AND ARE VERY EASY TO SEE I bought 4 wooden Rondavels (pictured) for $3. The selection runs from traditional to total tourist. There are about 15 stalls. It’s all negotiable!

Where I stayed on the beach, vendors would frequently stop by your lodgings with bags of stuff to sell you. If they don't have it, they will bring some to you if you ask them. I'm not kidding, they would probably bring you ANYTHING if wanted to buy it from them. Oh and they will often trade their trinkets and stuff in exchange for clothes, there are very few real stores in Mozambique for them to buy things from. I saw some people exchange candy and meals in return for some of their merchandise. Be careful of overpriced items. If you see something you like, you'll probably stumble across another market with the same thing you were looking for. Be smart about buying things in general, sorry if that's vague Look for things that aren't being sold at every single vendor. The things they sell they will try and tell you are authentic and their grandfather carved it; not true, they're just...
