THE HOT BOX - MAPUTO

by DAO

The Iron House (Casa do Ferro) was designed by Gustave Eiffel in the late 1800’s as a house for the Portuguese Governor of Mozambique. The building itself answers the question – did Eiffel ever go to Africa? He designed the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty and Maputo’s grand Train Station. This is not his finest design in terms of form or function. Totally unsuitable for the heat, this elaborate hot box was never used for it’s original purpose. Like many Eiffel constructions this structure was manufactured in France and then shipped to it’s final destination. This probably explains why no one thought beforehand that it would be too hot to live in. Today it is used by the Mozambican Central Office of Historic Monuments with the help of modern air conditioning. It is located to the left of the entrance of the Botanical Gardens.

Look for the monkeys

by Alexandra33

Sometimes, when you are taking your breakfast or evening tea at the outside area of your chalet this beduins will come over just to try the chance of getting some delicacies (better not get used to) ;)

Horse ride on the beach

by Eish

The horses were (quite) well behaved, and the humans extremely well behaved! It is such a wonderful experience having a beach ride at dusk and coming across a turtle crawling up onto the beach to lay her eggs. We felt like nature's guests.

EARLY MORING FISH WITH THE LOCALS

by DAO

Fancy an early morning fish breakfast? Have a fish along costal areas with some of the local men. They get up early and will probably let you join them for a small gift. The guys are out early to provide a good daily meal for their families and socialise at the same time. They are happy to have company, as this is a fun morning out as well. There are many hotels that will let you grill your fish later in the day, or breakfast if you really want. This is a lot cheaper than the charter boats that will charge you a fortune because you are a tourist. You can learn more about the local families routine and the challenges they face day to day.

BUY SOME EGGS

by DAO

OK. I did not. And I still feel bad about it every time I look at these pictures. Some 'Highways' can suddenly become non-existent in ‘Moz’. This poor kid was trying to sell some eggs to feed his family. And I did not stop. I am not a bad person, I just did not need the eggs. On the bright side there was (surprisingly!) a lot of traffic and he was the only roadside seller of any goods for miles. He also looked fairly healthy. I feel better now. So, if you do find yourself approaching a child on the side of the ‘road’; stop if you want some eggs.

swimming in the wild with dolphins and diving

by gyanacita

Of course these dolphins live in the wild, so you can not always expect to see them when going on sea, but... there is really a very good chance and you can just jump from the boat with a snorkle when you spot them and then almost touch them... and no... they don't seem to mind at all, on the contrary, they are as curious as we are... And it's great... to see a dolphin turn on its side underneath you, so that it can have a good look at you...Great to be in touch...

Tofu Bay snorkling with Whale Sharks

by Sjonnie123

At Tofu Bay we arranged a snorkling-trip. Although the Sea was rough, we were able to swim with Mantas. And not one but some 20. It was great to experience. A little time later at the Whale Shark Channel, we saw 3 Whale Sharks. After a little time of hesitation we jumped into the water and swim with them. Really amazing. 8 meters long and beautifull animals.

Laurentina beer

by MarioPortugal

Laurentina is a popular light Mozambican beer. Once in Mozambique, one should try it. :)I've read somewhere (?) that Laurentina started being export to South Africa in 2004 and, in early 2006, to the United Kingdom as well.

Turtle nesting

by Eish

Between October/November up to March, loggerhead and leartherback female turtles come to the beaches at Ponta Mamoli and around, to lay their eggs. At dusk, and throughout the night, they laboriously crawl up the beach, dig a hole, and lay up to 300 eggs (if I remember correctly). Be careful not to disturb them. Once they start laying their eggs, they go into a trance-like state. After they have laid their eggs, they cover them with sand using their hind paddle-like legs, and crawl back down to the sea. Interestingly, the same female could come onto shore a few times in the season to lay eggs. The resort we stayed at, Ponta Mamoli, are careful to drive their vehicle only below the high water mark, so that the nests are not disturbed.

You have to have Shrimp !!!

by MarioPortugal

.Once in Mozambique one has to have Shrimp !!! Shrimp pisciculture is one of the main industries that drives the country's economy. Once in Maputo it wouldn't be difficult to find a nice restaurant with shrimp in its menu.
