Seaside

by Polly74

The long, beautiful beaches of Tofo and Barra were legendary years ago and are fast regaining their former fame. Tofo is more accessible and more developed, with a hotel and holiday cottages. Barra is harder to reach but quieter, with a better setting: clean sand dunes with surf on one side and mangroves and palm groves on the other, where parrots and monkeys do their tropical stuff. Once South African fishermen stop driving along the beach in ugly 4WDs, it will be perfect. The beaches are accessible by car (though a 4WD really does come in handy for the last few kilometres of sandy road) and chapas, which go all the way to Tofo but stop 4km short at Barra village school, from where you can get a guide to show you the way to Barra Beach.

Beach!!!

by Bumble-Bee

If you take a chappa about an hour north of maputo you will get to a prefect beach =) to get there you have to cross a small river with a ferry and that can be an adventure =) but every trouble you might get it´s worth it when you get to the beach!!

Build a House

by LAOWAI

If you like Nhamatanda, you can build your own house. You get 4 choices: mud, mud and stone, mud, bamboo and stone, or plain old cement. These guys didn't like the idea of me taking their photo, but agreed when I told them I'd send a photo.

Foozball (Metraquillo)

by LAOWAI

The last thing I expected to see in a village like Nhamatanda was a foozball table. Heck, they've got two- one at the general shop down on the left and one at the gas station. And what a way to pass a couple of hours. For one American dollar, you can play half the kids in town. Unfortunately, most people don't have a dollar to throw away on foozball, so a crowd gathers anytime someone decides to play.

Evening Walks

by LAOWAI

Every night, Lord Jim would take me on a walk through his village. We'd meet men making bricks out of mud with a fire as their only light. We'd talk with kids carrying 30-pound buckets of water on their heads. We'd pass time with others in the fields, on left-over tanks from the war (with missles still in them -see photo). The whole village knows Lord Jim and he speaks Portuguese very well. He tells those who yell out 'white man' in the local dialect that he is looking for his girlfriend- and they all laugh. His students pick him out of pitch darkness- "Teacher!-" and invite us to sit with them by their huts. Others invite us over for Cokes or Beer at the 'Best Bar in Nhamatanda' - the gas station, A game of Foozball is 4 cents, but standing is free., and and most of all we'll just stand around in the middle of seemingly nowhere where people live without running water or electricty, and...

Mapiko dance

by trilbi

If you travel in the north eastern region of Mozambique where the Makonde people live, try to assist to a mapiko ritual dance. The mapiko, a figure of fear who represents evil or bad things, is the most important figure in the Makonde society and is used by men as a mean of dominating women and uninitiated children through fear. The dance, that is also performed on happy occasions starts with the musicians playing drums and the arrival of a dancer, the mapiko, wearing a mask which covers his entire head. The mapiko takes up position in the centre of the arena facing the musicians. At either side is a line of young unmarried women who start to dance slowly moving only their arms and shoulders. Next to the musicians are the men who will dance, dressed in skirts made of leaves. As the drums begin, the men start to make threatening gestures and shout words towards the mapiko dancer. They...
