Favorite thing: As far as I could see from the bus window, the people along the road looked more poor than the people I met in Windhoek. But they were friendly, smiled and made salutes when the bus passed by their villages. The friendliness of the people was also something I observed in the provice capital, Katima Mulilo. Caprivi area is mainly inhabibted by the Lozi people.

Fondest memory: Caprivi region is a 400 km strip of land at the top right hand corner of Namibia. It borders with Angola and Botswana in an odd and unnaturally way towards east. It also borders Zambia and Zimbabwe. The small strip of land is the only area of Namibia that is lush and green. The terrain is flat with woodlands, and contains National Parks and safari opportunities.

The strip of land was negotiated in 1890 as an exchange with the United Kingdom. Von Caprivi arranged for Caprivi to be annexed to German South-West Africa in order to give Germany access to the Zambezi River and a route to Africa's East Coast, where the German colony Tanganyika was situated. (The river later proved to be unnavigable.) The annexation was a part of the Heligoland-Zanzibar Treaty, in which Germany gave up its interest in Zanzibar in return for the Caprivi Strip and the island of Heligoland in the North Sea.
The Caprivi strip was later a strategic South African military zone, but is now a part of Namibia. It has been a long-standing dispute between Namibia and Botswana on Caprivi's southern boundary.

Caprivi region contains 6 constituency: Kabe, Kongola, Linyanti, Sibinda, Katima Mulilo Urban
area, Katima Mulilo Rural. The strip is mainly inhabited by the Lozi people who wants an independent Caprivi. The Lozi people share a common language and history, and feel more connected with the Lozi people in Zambia, Angola and Botswana. Since the border was unnaturally formed, the splitting of tribes into different countries resulted in cross border strife. The Caprivi Liberation Army (CLA) was established in 1994, and resulted in many clashes. In October 1998 the Namibian military raided a rebel training camp, and more than 100 armed rebels and about 2,500 civilians fled into Botswana.

The name Caprivi is sometimes misspelled as Caprivo.

Fondest memory: Okavango river runs from Angola and cross the western part of Caprivi. The river cross the Caprivi Highway where the game reserve starts. Wild animals are living in the wetland, so hold your camera ready.
