Watch the seals
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are many thousands seals in this colony and you do not need to look for them, they are just on the rock or on the sand by the beach.

    Watch the seagulls
  • Tip Rating:
  • There were also some seagulls but not that much, just a few and they will just try to get the leftovers from the jackals

    Watch the Jackals
  • Tip Rating:
  • Where there are baby seals, there will be also the jackals. Those small desert predators are very smart and will be waiting for their chances to snack a young seal.

    Baby Seals

At the time of year we were here (late Nov early Dec), there were a lot of pups.
Not all of them were a pretty sight either. As there are so many seals living on this beach, sometimes as our guide told us, the mother will forget who her pup is, not so many of them survive.
So, do expect to see a lot of dead pups - which is a sad sight.

Some of them though were very curious and would waddle over to check us out!

    More Seals

The reason to come to Cape Cross is to see the seals - they are amazing and you will get as many great photos as your memory card allows!
The smell is vile - but the seals are fabulous.

Look not only on the beach, but also in the sea and you are sure to see many of them swimming.

    A beach of seals

Visiting Cape Cross is a must visit in Namibia.
When we visited I had never seen seals in the wild before and I was totally amazed and so excited!
In fact, even now, living here in New Zealand where there are plenty of seals along the coast, I still have not seen this many all in one go.

The smell, the noise, the sights - it's just incredible.

    Watch the sea lion colony
At Cape Cross there are many sea lions. It's great to see em, but a bit less great to smell em.
Prepare yourself for a very intense smell.
Also stay behind the small wall. If you step over it some of the animals might attack you because you're getting too close to their kids.

    Cape Cross Seal Colony
Of course, if you have made the trip out here, you have come to see the seals - just remember to bring some smelly salts or a perfumed handkerchief as you can smell them a mile away.

This area is the breeding ground for the Cape fur seals and is literally home to thousands and thousands of seals.
