Solitaire Things to Do
There are a few Tropic of Cancer signs about but this one has to be the most aesthetically pleasing... especially if you can get a bird to pose like I did ;-)Related to:

During the one hour stopover you have plenty of time to explore the area, and see some of the few wildlife like squirrels and birds.
I saw this cute squirrel at the gas station of Solitarie. They use their upturned tails as sunshades, to protect them from the sun.
The Cafe Van Der Lee is just by the gas station, I did not know what really to make of it, everyone stop for gas here but no one take a break for a coffee or a drink, lost of potential if you ask me.
The best way to visit the Namib-Naukluft Park if you don´t have a car is by organized tours, I used the services of Wild Dog and Crazy Kudu tours, it was a real good desition, i enjoy every minute of the tour, a very profesional staff.
Walk through the general store and you will be surprised to find this wonderful little curio shop.
The shop looks a little but dusty but it is interesting to have a look around. There are stuffed antelope heads adorning the walls and on the table in the middle of the room, what was a lion! Here you can buy a variety of gifts or souvenirs, post cards and there is a really good selection of books.
If this is your first chance to shop then I would recommend that if you see a book that interests you then buy it here!
What to buy: Definately books and maps. If you see a little souvenir you want then why not.
If you are camping then stock up with provisions and definately fuel if yiou are going into the dessert.
What to pay: The items are priced but it's not expensive anyway.Related to:

Favorite thing: Solitaire is small one-man town. This one guy (dunno his name) is the mayor, the resident, the police chief, the shopkeeper, the fireman, etc. In short, he is the only permanent resident in the town of the size of a court yard. He became famous because he's obsessed with Jennifer Lopez. Legend has it when J. Lo was in Africa, she stopped by Solitaire and visited him. When I was there in 2002, the town was expanding. He had workers constructing new buidings in "town".
Fondest memory: Solitaire has a well that produce the sweetest water. If you happen to pass by Solitaire, make sure you fill up your water bottle with the best water I've ever tasted.
