Taxi quarrels
  • Tip Rating:
  • Taxi fees are currently (4 August 2006) N$6.50 to a standard destination kown here as a "taxi rank". If you want to go a little further than the taxi rank the maximum fee is N$13.00 (double the standard rate).

The taxi's here look like regular cars. You can identify them only by the yellow taxi beacon thingy and the address details printed on the side of the car. These taxis DON'T have meters.

The taxis that have meters are called Radio taxis. I will talk about these in the transportation tip section.

Just be frim and tell the driver that you live here and know that the rate is N$6.50.
If you want to avoid the fight you can then just pay the maximum which is N$13.00.

THE DEMANDED DONATION - NATIONAL MUSEUM

The National Museum of Namibia is FREE. That’s right – no admission fee. You go to the reception desk and they issue you with tickets. They then say, VERY LOUDLY – “DONATION!?” I am used to people trying to get money from me in the street, but not at a National Museum. I muttered an “excuse me?” and the lady shouted loude this time: ”YOUR DONATION!?”

Keep you composure. I paused for a moment after this blatant demand for money. I have this feeling any money I handed over would go straight into the employee’s pocket. I told them I would consider a donation, but wanted to look through the Museum first. You do not actually go past the reception again. DO NOT GIVE THEM MONEY! What is the point in having a FREE museum that’s not free?

    The Radio Taxi
This is not a tourist trip per se, it's just that tourists will take this expensive means of travel thinking it's the only way to get around town.
The radio taxi has a counter, so you get charged per km. That can be very expensive especially considering that you can pay just 6.50 or 13.00 maximum with a normal taxi.

I guess a radio taxi is handy f there are like four of you and you want to go to say the country club resort which is a distance out of town; if you take a normal taxi you ill each be required to pay the maximum rate or 5 bucks more, whereas with a radio taxi, you can split the ride cost ammongst the four of you, which could come out cheaper than having taken a normal taxi.
