We took the 9am tour, for which we were 10 minutes late, so missed the English tour and had to do the German one. Thank goodness both of us understand the language and can speak it. The tour started in the main hall where they are currently busy with some renovations and ended in the Bowling alley which is still in perfect condition. Very interesting to hear about life in this once flourishing town and to discover where was the school, hospital, butcher, baker etc and who lived in which house. Kolmaskopp is situated about 20 minutes from Luderitz in the heart of the desert. The town has not been inhabited by humans since 1956.

The hospital at Kolmaskopp which is located approx 20 minutes from Luderitz is one of the places where the tour will take you. It is amazing to see the wooden floors covered in sand, but still fully in tact. The one room has part of an old iron bed standing in the sand as the dunes have started taking over.

Kolmaskoppe is located approx 20 minutes drive inland from Luderitz town.
Kolmanskoppe was once the richest town in the world, famous for housing all of the workers on the nearby diamond mine.
When you arrive at Kolmanskoppe you cant just walk around this place by yourself you must jump onto one of their guided tours - in fact - this time I do agree with a guided tour, if you walked around by yourself it would just be a load of old buildings!
On a tour around Kolmanskoppe you will really get an idea of how these people lived and what they did.

A great trip from Luderitz is to go out to the ghost town of Kolmanskop which used to be a large diamond mining town.
It was deserted in 1956 and since then has slowly been reclaimed by the dunes.
There has been some restoration work done on some of the buildings and there is a great museum to look through.

They were busy restoring the old church when we were there. A really lovely old lady sitting on top of the hill overlooking the sleeping harbour town.
