There are no restaurants so if you are camping you will either cook or eat at the lodge where you are camping.
Campgrounds usually have BBQ facilities.
Lodges offer 3 meals a day. You get breakfast with your room but lunch and dinner are extra. The cost is very reasonable. Packed lunches can be ordered the night before.
Dinner is a buffet and at some lodges they will do a braii (Afrikaans for BBQ or grill).
If you are a vegetarian there won't always be a good selection for you. Some lodges put on better spreads than others. If you like meat you will not be disappointed although if you are fussy prepare yourself for game as the meat is usually a choice of kudu, oryx or eland some lodges will have beef, pork, lamb and sometimes ostrich. One lodge even had crocodile!
At the Namib Desert Lodge we never really had time for breakfast as we left early both mornings. But they did have the usual cereals, fruit, cold meats and cheeses for the Germans and bacon and scrambled egg. They even made their own bread here which wasn't too bad. However, as it was buffet the eggs and bacon were sitting for a while and the bacon was very fatty.
The first day we had a packed breakfast, which was a sandwich, apple, yoghurt and a fruit drink.
Lunch that day was open toasted sandwiches with a typical mystery meat salad. I presume it was eland from the day before. The next day we had a packed lunch which we ate at Ganab. This lunch included a mystery meat schniztel, which was quite tasty if not a bit greasy!
Our first evening meal the waitress served our starter and took our wine order then the buffet was open after and we had eland stroganof which was quite good but nothing special. The next night we had oryx goulash, again nothing special. All served with rice ot pots. and salad, which is quite okay to eat. I can't remember what the starters were but the desserts were superb and very English. On the whole all desserts in Namibia were delish and I'm not really one with a sweet tooth!
The wines excellent, the beer is good too!

There is not much that you can expect in the desert, so some good supply and self cooking can make great dinner in the desert. Especially when there is cold beer in the local store :) Leave a Comment Theme: Local
