At the hostel, we met a man working for a desert elephant preservation camp. He explained that it was near Brandberg Rock Art site. Not knowing where that was, we asked for directions. He offered to show us and said we could stay in the camp. Up for the adventure, our citigolf trailed behind his lumbering 4x4. The camp was totally organic, hand made, and very close to the rock art site. We slept in wooden tent shape structures with no doors...completely open to area desert life. hmmm...but it was worth it, and we met amazing people from all over the world, hiding in a small camp buried in Namibia.

This was an interesting stop on our way to Etosha National Park. Palmwag is desert oasis and has stunning views of the surrounding landscape. It is also the place to spot the elusive desert elephants. We didn't see any though.
Palmwag is located in Damaraland in northern Namibia. It is very close to Twyfelfontein, the site of the ancient rock carvings.

Our safari leader suggested we visit the Otjitotongwe Cheetah Park to see both tame and wild cheetahs. This was brilliant. We even got the opportunity to see a baby cheetah. As a result we forwent the visit to the 'White lady' and the rock engravings at Twyfelfontein. The people in charge of the Cheetah park advised us to back track only 20 or 30 miles to a place called 'Peet Alberts Koppie' where we could climb the small rocky out crop and see a large number of rock carvings in a very unpopulated and unvisted region. It was amazing the effect it had upons. We walked around amongst them in great awe. Only speaking in whispered tones as if we were going to disturb balance of the area and feeling very grateful that we were 'permitted' this awesome sight.

THE HIGHPOINT RISES 8550 FT. (2606 M.). THIS IS THE BEST (AND ONLY) PICTURE OF THE HIGHPOINT, WHICH I BELIEVE IS THE ROUND ROCK IN THIS PHOTO...HERE IS A DESCRIPTION OF THE HIGHPOINT TAKEN FROM THE NET: The Brandberg with its highest peak Königstein (2606 m above sea level) is the highest mountain in Namibia and a National Monument.
The geological history of Brandberg is just as interesting as the thousands of rock art paintings and engravings on the mountain and its surroundings. The Brandberg itself is not a volcano but is a granite plug which was pressed out of the volcano's pipe and stopped at about 10 000 meters under the surface. That is why the granite of the Brandberg is younger than the Dolorite which lies around the Brandberg.
The Brandberg is an isolated massif reaching 2,606 meters (8,550 feet) which rises much higher than any other feature for hundreds of kilometers around. It is composed of a single mass of granite that rose through the Earth's crust some 120 million years ago.

The Khoisan rock paintings at Brandberg, include the famous 'White Lady' believed to be up to 16,000 years old. There are many other paintings in the area. Also of interest are the rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, where the animal and human figures have been carved into the rock.
