    Visiting the Owambo Area

by ngaka Written Aug 24, 2002

    0.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Visiting the Owambo area in the extreme north of the country, you get to see Namibia's heartland and where the majority of its population originate from. Large numbers of roadside shops, markets, bars and frequent public transport gives this area a much more African feel and is a welcome change from the European influenced south.

Get off the main road, drive through the small villages to see the real Namibian life, and if you're lucky you'll meet the Herera Ladies with their beautifull Bavarian Skirts, but you need to pay some money before you can make a picture.

The Epupa Falls are on the Kunene River in the extreme northern part of Kaokoland, which forms the border between Namibia and Angola. The river itself is full of crocodiles, but we did not see any

The red ochre is everywhere even on the chickens, and it is considered offensive to wipe it off. Its softer than the most expensive hand cream, probably better too.......

If your vehicle is capable, Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei are well worth it. The red sand and pans are like nothing I've ever seen.

When you travel from Walvis Bay this is the first sight you get of Swakopmund. It looks like a true oasis in the desert. Everywhere else wher you look you only see sand and dunes.

A very extremely early start into the day was required to be part of this fun near Sesriem/Sossusvlei area. Formations look interesting, there must have been water some time ago.

The Cape Cross Seal reserve is rather unexpected. A fur seal colony in Africa was a surprise. There are thousands of seals here. You can get quite close.
