To be honest, these grounds are huge and as you can see in the photos, you could actually be out on safari in a proper game park. Leave a Comment |
Once we had been out there a while, the Cheetah's got used to us, either that or they could smell the meats that we had onboard to feed to them! These Cheetah's are protected by the sanctuary, as there is no game for them to naturally hunt, everyday the jeep comes through and throws huge pieces of raw meat out at them, it's then up to them to fight over it and chase it, so, yes they are fed, but no they are not hand fed. The cheetah here were the main attraction, but it turned out that the owners had pet monkeys too! This of course was such fun, and the monkeys were not shy! They quite happily jumped on people in our groups shoulders and made them jump! Leave a Comment |
This part os the Cheetah experience at Otjiwarongo was the only part which did feel a little like a circus or a zoo! The Cheetah's were of course very tame, and we sat around them, petting them and taking photo's. This was the first part of our experience and before any of the information had been explained of why these cheetahs are here. Basically they need to be, to be kept from poachers and to try and increase Namibia's rapidly decreasing Cheetah rate. Despite it feeling like a zoo, it was great to be up close to these magnificent creatures. Leave a Comment |
When the meat was thrown out of the jeep, we saw how fast these animals were! They are so lean and muscular, and stride beautifully across the fields. When they run, they run! Sand whirled in the air from their feet and they were off, some would then fight over a piece of meat and others would share, some would just wander around looking to see where the next bit was coming from! Soon enough we found them. Despite the fact that these particular cheetahs are used to people, they were very wary of us. Prowling around and running away. It's not like they stood there happily having their pictures taken! Leave a Comment |
