All is there but..

a bagpack to carry with you always. Not too big so that it can be hidden easily (thefts do occur...). A bag that holds a big bottle of water People wear quite casual clothes in the north. Shoes should be the comfortable ones. It's very, very dusty (the cream coloured dust, not the terracotta coloured in the north) and it can ruin your good shoes. Beware the rains: the roads are tarmac roads in towns but everywhere else it's dust that turns into mud great pharmacies in Oshakati/Ongwediva. The usual medication (and sun screens etc) available in the shopping areas Films are expensive, so bring your own Didn't see many shops outside Windhoek an extra toilet roll isn't such a bad idea to carry in your bag; everything can be bought in towns, including food

Some suggestions..

Suitcase & bags is alright as it's not exactly suitable for hitchhiking due to very long distances in a desertlike climat. Very light T-shirts, silk shirts are perfect to wear and to maintain. Shorts and perhaps a set of casual long trousers for Windhoek occasions. Sturdy shoes and thongs. SUNGLASSES (black), SUNBLOCK! Waterbottle vacuumflask to keep stuff cool. Stock up on it in Windhoek or just bring what's necessary to you. Might be cheaper where you live so bring some. A piece of cloth might come handy as an awning to provide some shade if you're travelling in a rental and want to picknick. Deserted areas tend to be dusty bear it on mind while packing! Also inside of car will be sooner or later...

Moisturiser and lip salve - in late September is was incredibly dry and it takes effect on your skin quickly. Much of the photography we did was either early morning or late afternoon when the light is fading. ISO200 or ISO400 film should be used and the biggest zoom lens you can afford/carry. Having said that, you can get quite close to some of the animals so our 100mm-300mm was sufficient in most cases.

take something you can easily carry, because once you're out in the boonies, wheels will do you no good, and you'd better not mind it getting dirty. Tevas, or light-weight sneaks; dark socks...anything else gets impossibly dirty from the sand; clothes you can get dirty...you'll be crammed into some dirty spots, and light-weight; layers, it's a desert, the evenings can get quite chilly, even if the days hit 90! TOILET PAPER!!! public restrooms are abysmal; bandaids...those thorns are hideous, and visine...sand in the eyes gets irritating. and a washcloth. bring extra batteries because unless you are in a major town, no access...and a zoom lense will come in handy many times!!! also, a head's up, photo shops give a roll of film when you develop, but they won't always reciprocate 1 roll per 1 roll, but rather just per drop off...and ask for matte with the white border...the quality is...

If traveling by auto/motor home, no special luggage requirements. But don't bring new luggage - dust/sand is everywhere and gets into even closed baggage. Our visit was during August, which is winter in Namibia. It got rather cold at night (as low as 3-4 C) and hot during daylight hours (upwards of 30C), so a good mix of clothing is needed. Good walking shoes are a must (

Hat, sunglasses, and good hiking boots are essential. Sunblock, skin moisturizer, and water -- it's VERY dry in Namibia, and the altitude in the central highlands makes the sun particularly intense. Bring it all - Namibia is a photographer's paradise! Camping is a great way to explore Namibia - bring your tent and sleeping bag if you want to sleep in the bush. Don't forget to shake out your boots in the morning - scorpions love to sleep in them at night! Bring binoculars for the birds and wildlife.

Malaria is a big problem in Namibia, especially in the northern parts.Unfortunately it is usual in western countries to travel lot's of medicine. You may take prophylactical things with you. If you don't want to take one of these (they harm the body where ever they can), take some fluids with you to defend yourself from the mosquitos and go to the first farmacy you see. Most pharmacists in Windhoek do speak fluent English and/or German. They have the much better advices. But: it's then too late for prophylactical medicine if you plan to go to the north at once.
