Quite small (so phone ahead), very, very good food, coming in big portions!

Crostini with chicken-liver on piri-piri sauce, (hot) on a fresh salad.

Fresh mussels, Scampi, Crayfish, Sole, the seafood-platter ... etc. etc.

Fresh Beer from the Tap, lots of Wild on the Menue like: Kudu ribs, Springbock, Crockodile and Ostrich etc.
The portions are very big, too.

The Decoration is worth a look, too. It is very rustical, wherever you look there are things from the fondation of this country. Wooden boxes and buckets, ...

Try the Oryx steak or the Spareribs!
Do not forget to order some local beer with it. It is very good.

This is really a great place. You can eat here game animals. I did asked for a gembok and it was really on of the best meat I have ever try.

The ambience was really nice. It full of tourist and you should reserve cause is always full. The tables are in german style, longs ones that are shared with others.

    Just look its page.

Joe's is an institution, it's both the locals favourite city bar/restaurant as well as a must visit place for every tourist passing through Windhoek. Everyone you speak to knows Joe's and will have been there on several occassions, it's the locals advice to pay it a visit and it's well worth going to experience the atmosphere of this very popular diner. Make sure you book well in advance as it gets full very quickly.
You can't miss it, on the roof just to give a taster of what is to come inside the Bar, is a birds nest with a pram in it! Yep, that's right........inside is packed with many more antiquities of Africa, Australia and the like. There is a pond, which is surrounded by thatched huts, housing tables and chairs, a bar playing music from days gone by, my era in Africa, so suited me down to the ground and took me back a few decades. The food is good wholesome meat, what more could you expect from this carnivorous country. The service is 'hectic' I think is the best way to describe it but always polite, willing and helpful. The atmospher is buzzing and fun.

Joe's Beerhouse in Windhoek is really a pub serving food. It's mostly open-air, divided up into smaller 'rooms' for people to sit around huge fires that are burning in the middle. The food is seriously carnivorous, although they have a limited vegetarian menu. They serve huge portions of game and other meats, which are really delicious.

    Booking is strongly recommended.

I was very tempted by the Gemsbok steak, but had only been admiring them alive a couple of hours earlier, so I went for the Eisbein. This was cooked perfectly, with crispy crackling round the outside and very juicy tender meat inside.

With great atomosphere and special decoration, it is more than enjoyable place to eat. A lot of foreigners came here to seek real African food, well, I think it's a recommanded place.

bushmen sosatie--for first and last visitors, I think it's good to have all the yammy food in the same plate, where there are kudu, springbok, zebra, crocodile and so on. Although it's kinda expensive than other choices but it really worth it.

Of course when on the road and in the wilderness, one of the best fun and joy is to cook your own food. There are no cooking facilities in the camping sites, so have you own wood or gas for the cooking as well as all the pots, pans and other tools.
Food you can by at the camping stores.

Mowani Mountain Camp, southern Damaraland: Outstanding cuisine at the Mowani tented camp!

Most of the lodges and tented camps in Namibia have pretty good food. But, I felt that the Mowani Mountain tented camp, near Twyfelfontein, warranted special mention.

"Abie", an Alfred-Hitchcock-esque fellow (except for the smile) runs the food and drink concession at Mowani, and it's top rate. From the cooked to order breakfast in the morning until the last morsel of dessert at night, Abie is on the scene and paying attentione to detail. He will appear at each meal to insure that the service and food was "sahhhhhstisfactory". But the truth is this....satisfactory would never make Abie happy. His cuisine and service is outstanding. I would truly choose to stay at Mowani based on the food alone.

Our evening table d'hote meal started out with a terrine of duck salad. There followed an outstanding cream of cauliflower and squash soup. The main course included perfectly prepared filet of beef, roasted potatoes, crisp vegetables and a beet mousse. Dessert was an interesting variation of the traditional German-style apfelstrudel, with luscious ice cream. Accompanying each course was another outstanding wine list selection.

    It was splendid.

The Rostock Ritz, Namib-Naukluft Desert: Eat, but don't sleep, at the Rostock Ritz

  • The Rostock Ritz.....weird, huh? - Namibia
    The Rostock Ritz.....weird,
    huh?
    by pchamlis
The Rostock Ritz is out on the C14, approximately 40 km north of Solitaire. This would definitely qualify as "out in the middle of nowhere". It's kind of a weird looking place constructed of a bunch of igloo-like buildings joined together. It makes for very strange accoustics in the dining room. Not unpleasant, mind you....just strange.

The food is filling simple local fare, with a heavy nod towards the German heritage of Namibia. (hence the name, "Rostock" Ritz). There is also a small lodge, also constructed of these weird igloo buildings. They seemed to have nice air conditioning, and looked comfortable. But, I thought the lodge prices were high for the middle of nowhere. (about US$100 per night for a double). So my advice is to eat and run. : )

Note, this place is supposedly managed by a pub in Swakopmund called "Kukli's". So, you could ask about eating at the Ritz when you're in Swakop.

We had a wonderful roasted oryx dish, accompanied by a salad, some crispy vegetables and some terrific homemade spaetzle. The sauce/gravy from the oryx was especially nice on the spaetzle.

There was also cold beer, and for dessert....ice cream and chocolate sauce.

Having a good time at Joe's
    Beerhouse
    by pchamlis
The toughest part about this tip was categorizing Joe's. It could be local, and it's sure as heck a meat-eater's place. But in the end, I think eclectic and international describes it.

Joe's is a huge place, including a craft store, some water gardens and the like. Much of the restaurant has indoor seating, but there's plenty of outdoor space, too.

Much of the food is cooked outdoors over an open fire, and the plethora of dishes available is staggering. There are a large number of German and game-meat dishes on the menu.

The service was very friendly, and we had an excellent time.

And, they don't call it Joe's BEERHOUSE for nothing, folks. Tall, cold frosty beers bring back thoughts of Alt Deutschland.

Joe's is a Windhoek tradition and institution. You'll notice, while surfing VT, that I'm not the only person who writes about it. If I had just one night to eat in Windhoek, I'd go here.

Well, everything that we ordered was very good.

One member of our party had a fine schnitzel and some roasted potatoes. Three others opted for the small filet steak. Small is a relative term, and they had difficulty finishing the large portion. The meat was well-prepared and tasty.

I had a kebab dish, with ostrich as the prime meat participant.

Again, the beers were cold and refreshing.
