If you are on a road trip through the Northern part of Namibia, your travels will probably take you to Outjo. The Café Bäckerei is a great place top fuel up before an early start from Outjo. You can stop here for a quick pastry or a hot morning meat pie. They also do simple meals like schnitzels, burgers, and chicken. In fact it seemed to be the...

  • Own food

Of course when on the road and in the wilderness, one of the best fun and joy is to cook your own food. There are no cooking facilities in the camping sites, so have your own wood or gas for the cooking as well as all the pots, pans and other tools.Food you can by at the camping stores.

  • BRAAI

Who needs a restaurant when you could be cooking in the beautiful outdoors of Namibia? They are blessed with great weather and you can Braai virtually every night. The word Braai (rhymes with ‘cry’) is Afrikaans for ‘barbecue’ or ‘roast’. To me it translates as simply delicious. You also get to burn stuff to make your meal. Most grocery stores have...

  • Visiting Windhoek? You GOTTA go to...

The toughest part about this tip was categorizing Joe's. It could be local, and it's sure as heck a meat-eater's place. But in the end, I think eclectic and international describes it.Joe's is a huge place, including a craft store, some water gardens and the like. Much of the restaurant has indoor seating, but there's plenty of outdoor space,...

  • It's a must when you are in Windhoek

The restaurant has a very big beer garden which is partly covered by the "lapar" a typical roof. But in the evening (in winter time) it gets really cold if you can't get a table inside. The place is decorated all over with very nice things and souveniers. It is a pleasure to look at all.Back again twice in October 2004! On Sundays they have lunch...

  • Outstanding cuisine at the Mowani tented...

Most of the lodges and tented camps in Namibia have pretty good food. But, I felt that the Mowani Mountain tented camp, near Twyfelfontein, warranted special mention."Abie", an Alfred-Hitchcock-esque fellow (except for the smile) runs the food and drink concession at Mowani, and it's top rate. From the cooked to order breakfast in the morning until...

  • Seriously Meaty Windhoek

Joe's Beerhouse in Windhoek is really a pub serving food. It's mostly open-air, divided up into smaller 'rooms' for people to sit around huge fires that are burning in the middle. The food is seriously carnivorous, although they have a limited vegetarian menu. They serve huge portions of game and other meats, which are really delicious.Booking is...

  • Great food, better location.

The food at the Raft is very good, and with the fantastic location on the beach, in the lagoon, this is absolutely a place to try out. Watch the flamingos and the pelicans walk around below the windows, as you eat and have bottle of wine at sunset. Lovely.

  • Right on the Ocean

Where else can you eat fresh seafood in an old Clyde-built tug, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The large windows give superb views of the beach and the sea, and the bar feels like your on board an old tug (which you are!). The food and service match the surroundings. The seafood platter is excellent, but the whole menu is mouthwatering.

  • Solitaire - Apple crumble

When you drive south from Swakopmund, you have to stop in Solitaire. As the name suggests, there isn't much there. Its so small that if you blink, you'll miss the "town". But there is one motel-gas station-restaurant. You have to try their apple crumble. It's famous and I think everyone passing by is stopping there to eat some. You can't miss it,...

  • Eat, but don't sleep, at the Rostock...

The Rostock Ritz is out on the C14, approximately 40 km north of Solitaire. This would definitely qualify as "out in the middle of nowhere". It's kind of a weird looking place constructed of a bunch of igloo-like buildings joined together. It makes for very strange accoustics in the dining room. Not unpleasant, mind you....just strange. The food is...

The Ojtitotongue Cheetah Farm and Lodge's main claim to fame is, not surprisingly, their cheetahs.
