The local restaurants
We surely did not made it all the way to Namibia for the food, however, we did try few and you can find in the cities and the camping sites good places where to eat with a high standard of choices and quality.

Joe's is an institution, it's both the locals favourite city bar/restaurant as well as a must visit place for every tourist passing through Windhoek. Everyone you speak to knows Joe's and will have been there on several occassions, it's the locals advice to pay it a visit and it's well worth going to experience the atmosphere of this very popular diner. Make sure you book well in advance as it gets full very quickly. You can't miss it, on the roof just to give a taster of what is to come inside the Bar, is a birds nest with a pram in it! Yep, that's right........inside is packed with many more antiquities of Africa, Australia and the like. There is a pond, which is surrounded by thatched huts, housing tables and chairs, a bar playing music from days gone by, my era in Africa, so suited me down to the ground and took me back a few decades. The food is good wholesome meat, what more could...

Kukis Bar and restaurant in SwakopmundThis is a lively place, with a great bar and eating are out front. But in the back there is a more quite restaurant area where you can actually have a conversation over your meal. Prawns in Peri Peri sauce, you should have seen the size of the prawns!
Quite small (so phone ahead), very, very good food, coming in big portions! Crostini with chicken-liver on piri-piri sauce, (hot) on a fresh salad.Fresh mussels, Scampi, Crayfish, Sole, the seafood-platter ... etc. etc.

The toughest part about this tip was categorizing Joe's. It could be local, and it's sure as heck a meat-eater's place. But in the end, I think eclectic and international describes it.Joe's is a huge place, including a craft store, some water gardens and the like. Much of the restaurant has indoor seating, but there's plenty of outdoor space, too.Much of the food is cooked outdoors over an open fire, and the plethora of dishes available is staggering. There are a large number of German and game-meat dishes on the menu. The service was very friendly, and we had an excellent time. And, they don't call it Joe's BEERHOUSE for nothing, folks. Tall, cold frosty beers bring back thoughts of Alt Deutschland.Joe's is a Windhoek tradition and institution. You'll notice, while surfing VT, that I'm not the only person who writes about it. If I had just one night to eat in Windhoek, I'd go here. Well,...

....make sure to stop at the Bakery Dekker! A "real" German bakery far away from home :-)The butterflies are the best! In Germany haven't found a Bakery yet which has as good ones as they have. Also the chocolate milk shake is delicious!

The restaurant has a very big beer garden which is partly covered by the "lapar" a typical roof. But in the evening (in winter time) it gets really cold if you can't get a table inside. The place is decorated all over with very nice things and souveniers. It is a pleasure to look at all.Back again twice in October 2004! On Sundays they have lunch buffet! I ate so much, that I needed a double espresso. The Namibian way to serve it: Bring to single once! :-) The springboek dish was very very delicous. I prefer springboek as meat like it is supposed to be ... But also taste the shooter Springboek it is baileys with peppermint liquor and you have to mix it in your mouth before swallowing .... My favourite is the bushman skewer. You get five types of meat: ostrich, crocodile, zebra, kudu and chicken. Didn't eat the chicken as it was to much for me and as I also get chicken in Germany ...

With great atomosphere and special decoration, it is more than enjoyable place to eat. A lot of foreigners came here to seek real African food, well, I think it's a recommanded place. bushmen sosatie--for first and last visitors, I think it's good to have all the yammy food in the same plate, where there are kudu, springbok, zebra, crocodile and so on. Although it's kinda expensive than other choices but it really worth it.

Fresh Beer from the Tap, lots of Wild on the Menue like: Kudu ribs, Springbock, Crockodile and Ostrich etc.The portions are very big, too.The Decoration is worth a look, too. It is very rustical, wherever you look there are things from the fondation of this country. Wooden boxes and buckets, ... Try the Oryx steak or the Spareribs!Do not forget to order some local beer with it. It is very good.

The food is great. We had lunch there and it was excellent. The pastries are the best. They have everything and it was as tasty as you can get. Not very cheap but absolutely worthwhile. You can get it take-away. Don't leave Swakop without visiting Cafe Anton. The pastries. It is light and tasty. One won't be enough believe me.
