Mowani Mountain Camp, southern Damaraland: Outstanding cuisine at the Mowani tented camp!

by 850prc

Most of the lodges and tented camps in Namibia have pretty good food. But, I felt that the Mowani Mountain tented camp, near Twyfelfontein, warranted special mention."Abie", an Alfred-Hitchcock-esque fellow (except for the smile) runs the food and drink concession at Mowani, and it's top rate. From the cooked to order breakfast in the morning until the last morsel of dessert at night, Abie is on the scene and paying attentione to detail. He will appear at each meal to insure that the service and food was "sahhhhhstisfactory". But the truth is this....satisfactory would never make Abie happy. His cuisine and service is outstanding. I would truly choose to stay at Mowani based on the food alone. Our evening table d'hote meal started out with a terrine of duck salad. There followed an outstanding cream of cauliflower and squash soup. The main course included perfectly prepared filet of...

Joe's Beerhouse: Seriously Meaty Windhoek

by swakopgirl

Joe's Beerhouse in Windhoek is really a pub serving food. It's mostly open-air, divided up into smaller 'rooms' for people to sit around huge fires that are burning in the middle. The food is seriously carnivorous, although they have a limited vegetarian menu. They serve huge portions of game and other meats, which are really delicious.Booking is strongly recommended. I was very tempted by the Gemsbok steak, but had only been admiring them alive a couple of hours earlier, so I went for the Eisbein. This was cooked perfectly, with crispy crackling round the outside and very juicy tender meat inside.

The Raft in Walvis Bay.: Great food, better location.

by Jimmytravel

The food at the Raft is very good, and with the fantastic location on the beach, in the lagoon, this is absolutely a place to try out. Watch the flamingos and the pelicans walk around below the windows, as you eat and have bottle of wine at sunset. Lovely.

The Tug: Right on the Ocean

by peterscot

Where else can you eat fresh seafood in an old Clyde-built tug, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The large windows give superb views of the beach and the sea, and the bar feels like your on board an old tug (which you are!). The food and service match the surroundings. The seafood platter is excellent, but the whole menu is mouthwatering.

Solitaire - Apple crumble

by Kramer01

When you drive south from Swakopmund, you have to stop in Solitaire. As the name suggests, there isn't much there. Its so small that if you blink, you'll miss the "town". But there is one motel-gas station-restaurant. You have to try their apple crumble. It's famous and I think everyone passing by is stopping there to eat some. You can't miss it, it's the only commercial building there. Price is about 2USD for the apple crumble and a coffee.

The Rostock Ritz, Namib-Naukluft Desert: Eat, but don't sleep, at the Rostock Ritz

by 850prc

The Rostock Ritz is out on the C14, approximately 40 km north of Solitaire. This would definitely qualify as "out in the middle of nowhere". It's kind of a weird looking place constructed of a bunch of igloo-like buildings joined together. It makes for very strange accoustics in the dining room. Not unpleasant, mind you....just strange. The food is filling simple local fare, with a heavy nod towards the German heritage of Namibia. (hence the name, "Rostock" Ritz). There is also a small lodge, also constructed of these weird igloo buildings. They seemed to have nice air conditioning, and looked comfortable. But, I thought the lodge prices were high for the middle of nowhere. (about US$100 per night for a double). So my advice is to eat and run. : )Note, this place is supposedly managed by a pub in Swakopmund called "Kukli's". So, you could ask about eating at the Ritz when you're in...

The Raft: Very delicious sea food

by chicabonita

The restaurant is divided in two parts. At the right hand side at the entrance you come to the bar where you can have only drinks. Following to the left you come to the restaurant. Both are very nice decorated with sailing staff and in the floor are some windows that you can see the sea (but when we were there in the evening I coudn't see anything).

Ojtibamba Lodge and Restaurant: Ojtiwarongo area, a good place to eat

by 850prc

The Ojtibamba Lodge is a nicely-run and clean lodge/restaurant located just a few km south of Ojtiwarango. They have typical Namibia lodge items for your consumption, and everything that we had was very good. One nice thing about the Ojtibamba was that they actually had a menu, with some choices. Out on the road in Namibia, it's usually more a case of table d'hote. : )Also, there is a nice outdoor garden area, where you might take lunch if the heat and wind are not disagreeable. There are lots of birds in the surrounding garden trees, and some nice flowers.Service was efficient and friendly. Everything was good.I ordered a "vegetable pot pie", which arrived hot and flaky. It had a lovely creamy filling with some cheese and lots of veggies. Very tasty and filling, and inexpensive.

Ojtitotongue Cheetah Farm and Lodge: Good farm fare between Outjo and Kamanjab

by 850prc

The Ojtitotongue Cheetah Farm and Lodge's main claim to fame is, not surprisingly, their cheetahs. (please see the comment about the cheetah and their program under "off the beaten trail, Namibia") But, they also have a small lodge, some campsites and a small cafe/restaurant. We had lunch with the fine folks at Otjitotongue, and the food was quite good. It was simple farm fare, which the lady of the house cooked up fresh just for us. We had tasty and fresh salad and greens, fresh bread, and a terrific rice and beef casserole dish. I specifically admired the excellent job of seasoning this simple dish that was done. I have actually written to ask for the recipe. So, this is a great place to have lunch out on the C40 between Kamanjab and Outjo. And, out in this dusty climate, it's also a place to nail down a cold Windhoek or Tafel lager! The beef and rice casserole that was served for...

Rocha: Playing pool and pica pau

by Soili

The restaurant was as they come everywhere. Playing the pool was something that I had never done before, and the evening turned out to be a very relaxing evening. No heavydrinking, but a good evening out with friends. Pica pau, a plate of small pieces of meat. The sauce is alittle vinegary, but OK. Too salty, though, but then, you can always enjoy one more bottle of beer. Naturally, good Namibian ale.
